Chapter 093: Life-and-Death Slaughter, Part One
Chapter 93: Life-and-Death Slaughter, Part One
“Your purpose is to have me ruin the Lin family’s marriage proposal, isn’t it?” Chu Fei looked at Chen Yaxin with a half-smile, speaking very directly and without beating around the bush. By now, he had completely figured out this woman’s true aim.
“That’s right.” Chen Yaxin was equally frank. She had come to Chu Fei for exactly that reason.
“What’s in it for me?” Chu Fei asked with a smile.
“Benefit?” Chen Yaxin blinked, not expecting him to ask that.
“Yes. Since you want my help, there has to be something in return. Otherwise, why should I help you?” Chu Fei raised an eyebrow.
Chen Yaxin looked even more taken aback. She said, “You need to understand this isn’t really you helping me. I’m helping you. I can give you the information you want so you can do your best to win the beauty’s heart. As long as you marry Fu Ziqing, the entire Fu family will belong to you in the future...”
“Whether I can marry Fu Ziqing is my own business. But right now, I’m the one helping you, aren’t I?” Chu Fei smiled, took another bite of chicken, then poured himself a glass of red wine and took a light sip. “You have your purpose, and naturally I need my own reward. Same as before: no reward, no help.”
Chen Yaxin was stumped by Chu Fei’s question. After hesitating for a moment, she bit her lip and asked, “What do you want?”
“One million.” Chu Fei held up one finger.
“One million?” Chen Yaxin was astonished. She had never expected that to be his demand.
“What, too much?”
“Heh.”
Chen Yaxin laughed, though it was a laugh of anger. The reason she had said so much nonsense just now was that she was afraid this guy would open his mouth like a lion and demand something beyond her means. If she had known Chu Fei’s so-called reward was only a mere one million, she would never have said so much nonsense in the first place. She might not even have mentioned the stakes at all. One million was nothing; it was just a bit of her pocket money.
With a crisp slap, Chen Yaxin took a bank card from her bag and placed it in front of Chu Fei. “There should be a little over two hundred thousand in here, as a deposit. As long as you let me see your sincerity at the birthday banquet, I’ll give you the rest no matter what the final outcome is.”
“Deal.”
Chu Fei smiled and snatched the bank card into his hand. That sight made Chen Yaxin curl her lip inwardly. A hundred thousand dollars and he was smiling like that? Was this guy really Fu Ziqing’s fiance?
Why did it feel so unreal?
“Come on, for the sake of our smooth cooperation, let’s have a toast.” Chu Fei raised his glass.
Chen Yaxin did not move. She felt that dining with a man like him was beneath her.
Chu Fei did not mind. He lifted the glass alone, just about to drain it, when his expression changed slightly. The smile froze on his face, and in that instant a bone-chilling cold surged through his entire body...
Chu Fei swiftly set down the glass and looked coldly at Chen Yaxin, whose face was full of contempt. In a low voice he said, “Your real purpose was never to have me ruin the Lin family’s proposal.”
“What?” Chen Yaxin looked blankly at Chu Fei, whose expression had suddenly turned dark. Frowning, she said, “What do you mean? I don’t understand.”
“You don’t understand?”
Chu Fei laughed, but it was a cold laugh. At that moment, the icy feeling intensified, as if he had fallen into an abyss of frost. With his experience and instincts, he could instantly determine that at least three firearms were trained on him right now, otherwise he would never have felt such a strong sense of danger...
Looking at Chen Yaxin’s bewildered face, he suddenly smiled. “What a fine scheme. Using the topic of the birthday banquet to distract me so those killers can creep in. Hah. I have no grudge against you, so this must be what that Lin Cong told you to do, right?”
“What are you talking about? I don’t understand—” Chen Yaxin’s expression was strange...
“You—”
Chu Fei was about to question her again when he suddenly stopped. His body shot out like an arrow...
At the same time...
Three dull suppressed gunshots rang out from the dim woods.
Thud, thud, thud—
Three bullets were fired almost at the same instant toward Chu Fei.
If Chu Fei had not dodged quickly, he would already have been dead.
One missed bullet struck the open ground. Another hit the wooden table between the two of them, punching straight through it. The third continued flying, aimed directly at Chen Yaxin on the opposite side...
Whoosh—
The bullet tore through Chen Yaxin’s clothes, leaving a bloody line on her arm. Luckily, it did not hit a vital spot.
“Ah!”
Chen Yaxin’s cry of shock and pain mingled together...
The sound made Chu Fei, who had just dodged the fatal strike and was about to dart into the woods for cover, suddenly freeze.
There was raw fear in Chen Yaxin’s scream, fear from the depths of her soul, with a trace of pain hidden inside it...
But Chu Fei did not stop, nor did he look back. Instead, he flashed into the woods and instantly concealed himself perfectly. By now, night had fallen, and their table had been set right at the edge of the forest, which made Chu Fei’s evasion all the easier.
Chen Yaxin lay sprawled on the ground, her face as white as paper. It was not only the pain from the wound, but above all the fear...
At that moment, she finally understood what Chu Fei’s last words had meant.
Someone had tried to kill Chu Fei and made it look as though it was her setup.
But this had nothing to do with her at all...
Rustle, rustle—
A flurry of footsteps approached quickly. Soon, two dark-skinned men in camouflage appeared in front of Chen Yaxin...
Were these the assassins who had just fired at Chu Fei?
The thought had barely surfaced in Chen Yaxin’s mind when she felt her body tighten. A burly man seized her by the arm and yanked her up, pressing a dagger straight to her throat.
The cold touch of the blade sent Chen Yaxin’s mind blank. She did not dare move. In all her life, this was the first time she had been so frightened that she lost all composure.
“Mr. Chu Fei, if you don’t come out and run off on your own, this woman of yours is going to be in danger.”
The dark-skinned man holding Chen Yaxin hostage shouted toward the woods, a savage grin spreading across his face. “But your woman is really something. Great body, gorgeous face, top quality. Killing her like this would be such a shame. Our brothers have been backed up lately anyway...”
He did not finish, but the meaning was clear enough: if Chu Fei did not come out, they would not only kill Chen Yaxin, they would have their way with her first and then kill her.
Chu Fei lay quietly on a tree only a few meters from the edge of the woods, hidden by the darkness and the shadow of the trunk. Even if someone walked beneath him and looked up, they would have a hard time spotting him.
In forest combat, Chu Fei was a true old hand. Using every obstacle to hide his body and make himself vanish was second nature to him.
But at this moment, Chu Fei’s expression was grave. Through the gaps in the trunk, he could clearly see what was happening outside: the two camouflaged men emerging from the woods, and the rough way one of them had seized Chen Yaxin and pressed a dagger to her throat.
This made him begin to doubt his earlier conclusion.
Could these people not be on the same side as Chen Yaxin?
Chu Fei’s gaze fell on Chen Yaxin’s injured arm. If they were allies, they would not have shot her. Could it have been a stray round?
He could not be certain.
At that moment, the burly man shouted again, “Not coming out, are you? Seems you don’t care about this woman. Ha! Then I won’t be polite...”
As he spoke, he reached out and forcefully pinched Chen Yaxin’s smooth cheek.
Chu Fei frowned. By now, he was basically certain these people were not working together. If they were, this act was a little too much.
Yet Chen Yaxin, startled by the man’s grip, recovered her senses. Her wide eyes slowly regained focus, and she finally realized what was happening. In an instant, her face went deathly pale...
The next moment, she said, “Stop using provocation. He won’t come out.”
Then she turned to the burly man. In her heart, she felt miserable. She had never imagined she would be so unlucky. She had merely wanted to fight for her own happiness, and instead she had run into assassins.
And these assassins were not even after her. She was just being dragged into it.
“Is that so?” The burly man laughed heartily, looking at Chen Yaxin. “You know him pretty well. Looks like this man of yours isn’t very dependable.”
“He’s not my man.” Chen Yaxin had rarely been this calm. She knew she was finished today. Chu Fei would not come out of the woods for her, and these bandits would certainly not let her go.
“You think I’ll believe that?” The dark-skinned man laughed loudly, looking at Chen Yaxin with open mockery. “If he’s not your man, why would the two of you, a man and a woman alone, come to this godforsaken place? You’re trying to fool a ghost?”
“I—”
Chen Yaxin was speechless. She found she could not even refute the bandit’s words...
But the truth was not like that at all. She barely knew Chu Fei, and today was only their first meeting.
Chen Yaxin thought bitterly to herself, though she did not say it aloud. She knew that even if she did, it would be useless. They would never believe her.
The burly man no longer paid attention to Chen Yaxin. He turned his head again toward the woods where Chu Fei had fled...
“Mr. Chu, you still won’t come out? Fine. Since you’re so heartless as to stand by and watch her die, then don’t blame us for being rude to your woman...”
When he finished speaking, the dagger in his hand suddenly moved away from Chen Yaxin’s throat and flickered through the air, slicing open the buttons on her blouse.
With a sharp rip, Chen Yaxin’s little jacket fell open, revealing the shirt beneath. The next instant, the dagger flashed again, and the shirt buttons also burst apart, exposing the pair of full, pronounced peaks beneath.
“Tsk, tsk. Mr. Chu has good taste. Your woman’s chest is really tempting. It makes me want to take a bite, heh heh...”
As the burly man leered obscenely, he flicked the dagger in front of Chen Yaxin, as if ready to slice open her bra at any moment, while his eyes remained sharp and fixed on the direction of the woods.
“No—”
Chen Yaxin cried out in alarm, her face turning as white as ash. She might not fear death, but no woman is ever unafraid of humiliation.
Yet she could not resist. The burly man had one hand locked tightly around her throat, leaving her unable to move at all.
As for the other man with the firearm, he watched the scene with interest. When his gaze fell on Chen Yaxin’s breasts, the same heat and greed surfaced in his eyes. But he did not act rashly, instead continuing to scan the woods with sharp attention.
“You win!”
A helpless voice came from the distance...
Then a figure appeared at the edge of the woods...
The despairing Chen Yaxin suddenly lifted her head. She stared in disbelief at that familiar yet strange figure, and for a moment she truly froze...
Chu Fei had actually come out?
From today on, updates will temporarily be limited to one chapter as a minimum. I’m leaving for Shandong this afternoon, and I’m not sure how many days I’ll be gone. I’ll add extra chapters as soon as I get back. If I have time to write in between, I’ll still post two chapters a day. To build up some stock, I was writing until after midnight last night. It’s been a long time since I stayed up late, and I actually ended up with insomnia.
Finally, more than one reader said Chu Fei seemed a little weak. He is not weak. The setup is that he is semi-invincible, with room to grow.
