Chapter 96: Capturing the Wolf-Shaped Exotic Beast
After passing through the slums, the gear worn by Yun Xuan and Bai Xue kept everyone at a distance.
Once they left Clear Moon City, Yun Xuan looked back at the city gate. The soldiers here were well equipped; to take this place would require at least ten mutant beasts, or a zombie horde numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
Traveling on foot, with Bai Xue’s ability to slay mutant beasts and the battle armor on Yun Xuan’s body, there was no need to fear even large numbers of zombies.
Most importantly, there was the beast-taming ring. If he could control mutant beasts, Yun Xuan’s chances of survival would rise by a great margin.
Yun Xuan and Bai Xue avoided the main road and headed into the alleyways. The place was like hell itself, with severed limbs scattered across the ground, as though still whispering of the suffering that had once taken place here.
“If zombies keep cleansing humanity and evolving without end, what will they become in the end?” Yun Xuan asked.
No one could answer him. Bai Xue merely looked at him without speaking.
“Roar!” A beast’s howl rang out. Yun Xuan leaped onto a rooftop and looked toward the wolf-like mutant beast not far away.
It was smaller than the tiger-like mutant beast, but far more agile. One leap carried it dozens of meters, making it hard to aim at.
“You cut off its limbs from the right side,” Yun Xuan said as he climbed onto the roof with his charged sniper rifle in hand.
At the command, Bai Xue sprang onto a building and rushed toward the wolf-like mutant beast, moving faster than it could.
“A weapon that is useless against humans yet seems invincible against mutant beasts—what exactly is it?” Yun Xuan muttered to himself, then also vaulted onto the rooftop and began to aim.
With a soft crack, a round from the charged sniper rifle struck the mutant beast.
“Roar!” The wolf-like beast turned toward Yun Xuan and bellowed in fury, charging at him.
Bai Xue dropped down from the right side beside the beast, her long sword flashing in her hand.
The blade swept across the wolf beast’s leg. Blood sprayed, and Bai Xue landed behind it.
With a heavy crash, the wolf-like mutant beast slammed into the ground, right in front of Yun Xuan.
Yun Xuan took out the beast-taming ring, cut open his finger, and let a drop of blood fall onto it. The ring burst into light.
He landed on the wolf beast’s neck and hurled the ring at it. The ring blazed brilliantly.
With a sharp click, the wolf beast’s neck was tightly locked. The beast-taming ring could actually enlarge itself.
“Mind linked?” Yun Xuan closed his eyes and sensed the beast’s way of thinking. Savage, cruel slaughter was the only path that could lead it to a higher rank.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make you into a wolf king.” Yun Xuan took out the crystal core from the earlier tiger-like beast and tossed it into the wolf beast’s mouth.
The wolf beast swallowed the crystal core. Its wounds began to heal, and it struggled back to its feet.
“Let’s go,” Yun Xuan said with a faint smile.
Bai Xue landed behind him. The two of them were now clad in black robes.
The wolf beast let out a howl and ran toward the area near Research Institute 1215. Its speed was so great that ordinary weapons could not possibly track it.
...
That night, Yun Xuan and Bai Xue returned to Research Institute 1215.
With the wolf beast’s help, the two of them only needed to finish off their targets. In one afternoon, they had slain two mutant beasts and more than five hundred zombies.
Each zombie was worth one exchange point. They were the most ordinary level-one zombies, with only greater strength than normal. To kill them, it was enough to strike the head once. Even ordinary people could do that.
The number of exchange points gained from mutant beasts differed depending on their size.
In the afternoon, Yun Xuan had not used the beast-taming ring to control another mutant beast, because his level was still too low. For now, he could only control one.
He had reached level 8. The upgrade system worked everywhere, and killing zombies and mutant beasts was equivalent to killing beasts and demons.
He was only two levels away from the level-10 gift pack, and Yun Xuan was already looking forward to the summoning card.
“Much more comfortable after a bath.” Yun Xuan sat at the table eating dinner: steak and red wine. It was a pity that sitting across from him was the expressionless Bai Xue.
Bai Xue did not need to eat, though if Yun Xuan ordered her to, she would still take a little.
After dinner, Yun Xuan browsed the largest forum on the Sky Net. Clear Moon City had long since established a forum with survivors all over the world, known as the Apocalypse Forum.
Language was automatically converted, with online translation allowing the entire world to share the latest intelligence.
“An unidentified sea mutant beast appeared in the East Sea and destroyed an aircraft carrier with one strike.”
“Five Mountain City has suffered a zombie tide and endured heavy losses. We urgently request supplies and are willing to pay a high price!”
“Moonfall City has officially been established. It is open to all survivors. Ability users and those with combat experience are welcome to join.”
“A pterosaur has appeared in a building near the Clear Moon City Museum! Suspected dinosaur egg hatching.”
Yun Xuan’s eyes lit up when he saw the last item.
A dinosaur egg? A pterosaur? Wasn’t that powerful aerial combat support, aside from fighter jets?
One had to know that when the meteor fragments fell, they had destroyed who knew how many aircraft systems, and countless electronic devices had been rendered useless. All communication now relied on the factories of the various survivor settlements.
The era of airplanes and artillery had basically come to an end. Even now, the Apocalypse Forum had yet to mention a single survivor settlement with a large number of fighter jets.
Fortunately, the army still remained. The order of Huaxia was basically being maintained without issue. As for the current state of affairs, all they could do was keep striving.
As long as ordinary people could be given the same strength as ability users, there would still be hope of defeating the zombie faction. That was the research direction of every survivor settlement at present.
Beyond Huaxia, everything was already in chaos. Yun Xuan could not help but sigh at the power of numbers.
What still managed to warm the heart a little, however, was that the large survivor settlements in Huaxia all provided one meal a day.
Mutant beasts, once slain, had blood and flesh that could be purified and turned into canned food. Clear Moon City did not possess that level of capability and could only rely on old canned provisions.
In the large survivor settlements, those canned goods were the survivors’ lifeline. Of course, the necessary labor was still required.
Each settlement kept clearing the surrounding areas and expanding its territory. There was no real conflict between them, at most some verbal sparring.
According to the treaty of the Capital Survivor Settlement, both leaders in any conflict would be eliminated.
With one level-8 ability user, fifteen level-7 ability users, and stealth fighters, the Capital Survivor Settlement still looked very much like it had in peacetime.
So long as one believed, there would come a day when the light would arrive. For the sake of that future light, all soldiers were willing to give their lives.
That was the so-called military spirit.
Because they love this land, these soldiers are its fiercest defenders and the pioneers who will open up Huaxia’s future.
Like Ye Shan, for instance. Even if he liked to make a little extra money on the side, when battle came, he would never leave a single person behind if he could help it, and would bring them back to the survivor settlement.
There were many soldiers like him. Every survivor settlement had them. And those who stood as leaders were all capable people.
The system used in Clear Moon City was, for the apocalypse, the most practical one. Fear only strips people of the will to fight. Cowards have no place surviving a great war.
As long as people in the slums could fight, men or women alike, they would join the army and be trained into soldiers of Huaxia.
P.S. Please do not overthink it. This is not saintly kindness; it is simply the kind of soldier I believe in. Please vote for me. Today my cousin’s child is turning one hundred days old, and I have to go serve the dishes...
