Chapter 11: A Sister’s Debt for Her Brother
Lin Mo just watched Lin Wan in silence.
"Oh."
Lin Wan seemed somewhat surprised. Every time she had said something like that before, Lin Mo would display a look of pain and helplessness. Seeing Lin Mo like that always made her happy. At the very least, it meant she had won completely, while Lin Mo looked like a pathetic wretch. Had she finally come to her senses this time?
"Heh." Lin Wan tilted her head, her fingers hooking the necklace around her neck. "You know, Mu Bai only buys you cheap stall goods, but he buys me high-end couture. Aren't you sad? Don't you feel hurt? As long as I crook my finger at him, he comes running eagerly."
Lin Wan smiled innocently, her expression pure and flawless. "He only got engaged to you because I rejected him. You’re so pitiful."
"Yes, yes, I'm pitiful," Lin Mo replied with a smile. "And you people are so noble."
Having said that, Lin Mo turned to leave. Watching her back, Lin Wan scoffed, "Pretending to be strong. Let's see how long you can stay calm!"
Lin Mo couldn't be bothered to waste any more words on her. She was headed to the internet cafe as usual tonight. The Lin family wouldn't buy her a computer, and she didn't want anyone discovering her secrets. However, just as she reached the entrance of the cafe, the phone in her pocket rang.
"Beep, beep, beep—"
It was a call from her second brother, Lin Hen. Lin Hen was an aimless drifter who rarely came home and lived the life of a carefree wanderer. He owned several high-end car dealerships and was a wealthy young master who lacked for nothing. When he spoke to her, it was usually to lecture her with moral platitudes. He was truly annoying. Moreover, he despised Lin Mo to the core and would never contact her voluntarily.
"Could it be..." Lin Mo frowned. As she recalled what was supposed to happen tonight, her expression grew dazed. Memories of her previous life surged back into clarity. She subconsciously touched her arm. For now, her skin was flawless, but after tonight, a long scar would mar it.
In her past life, on this very day, Lin Hen had suffered a heartbreak and lost a drag race at Autumn Leaf Mountain. The gang he raced against had taken his phone to call his "sister," but they had ended up calling her instead. Lin Mo had rushed over, only to be met with boundless despair. She remembered the overturned car, the mocking laughter of the gang, and their cruel delight as they looked down at her in a pool of blood.
After being discharged from the hospital a week later, Lin Hen had been busy protecting Lin Wan with meticulous care. Lin Mo gritted her teeth, clenching her fists. Later, to escape the nightmare, she had practiced racing for years, eventually winning the championship in the underground circuit. But what did it matter how good she became? In the end, she had lost that race when she was eighteen, and she had lost to the underhanded tactics of Lin Wan.
Lin Mo closed her eyes. The phone rang again and again, sounding like a death knell in the dark night. Her tumultuous emotions had completely calmed. Her eyes were unfathomably deep, filled with the color of darkness. She answered the phone with a cold, indifferent expression. A burst of boisterous laughter from men erupted on the other end.
"Yo, you're the sister of Young Master Lin, right?"
"Your brother lost a bet to us, and now we're here to collect his life!"
"If you don't want to see anything happen to him, get to Autumn Leaf Mountain right now. Come alone, understand?"
A man on the other end whistled intentionally; they were clearly a group of rich, entitled brats. "Come on, little school beauty, hurry up and come play with us, heh."
The noise was chaotic, and their remarks were vulgar and offensive. Lin Mo hung up and hailed a taxi by the roadside. As she got in, she lowered her head, a trace of mockery playing on her lips. She had not expected to have a chance to take revenge. Heaven was truly favoring her.
At the entrance of the internet cafe, Zheng Xiu watched Lin Mo turn a corner and leave. "Hey, why did she leave? That girl is a killer at gaming; she brought me a lot of business."
"Since you're already here, she couldn't have run far, could she?" Weisheng Yan stood in the shadows, his attitude ambiguous.
"Brother Yan, let's go, let's take a look." Zheng Xiu quickly took out his car keys. "I’m really keen on signing her into my esports team." He squinted his eyes. "Who knows, she might become the most beautiful woman in the esports world."
Weisheng Yan’s eyes were as deep as the night. He glanced sideways, his thin lips curling slightly. "Are you that bored?"
Zheng Xiu was puzzled. "Such a cute little girl, don't you like her?"
"I've seen her."
Zheng Xiu gestured for Weisheng Yan to get in the car. "Saw her at the cafe last time?"
Weisheng Yan’s Adam’s apple moved as he stood tall in the night air. "I saw her in the capital."
Autumn Leaf Mountain. It was a very high mountain with almost no traffic on the road. At the foot of the mountain sat more than twenty sports cars of various colors. Under the streetlights, a group of young men and women stood around, smoking and laughing, radiating the brash recklessness of youth.
Lin Hen sat in his car, reeking of alcohol. There were many bottles and cans scattered under the car door.
"Look at you, look at what they've turned him into," a woman nearby said, arms crossed, leaning against a wealthy second-generation heir. "Heh, I heard that this Young Master Lin's sister is a stunning little beauty. If you guys go too far, she might not be able to handle it."
"If she's a delicate little beauty, then we shouldn't hold back," Zeng Ke sneered, pinching Li Xue’s waist. "This Lin Hen really thinks he’s something special. His family only has a few million in assets, yet he dares to come here and play with us."
"Heh, he really doesn't know the height of the sky or the depth of the earth!"
Li Xue cast a contemptuous look at Lin Hen, who looked like a dead fish. "He’s just handsome, that's all. Xiu was a fool to even date him. Now that he's annoyed Brother Hu, he might be fine, but his sister is definitely going to be the outlet for their anger."
"Brother Hu hates it when people compete with him for women. He will definitely pay them back in kind."
"That’s not for us to worry about," Zeng Ke said, the corners of his mouth hooking up as he glanced at an approaching taxi.
It was already very dark. Lin Mo checked the time as she got out of the taxi: 10:30 PM. With her hands in her pockets, she walked forward step by step. As if on cue, the group whistled and turned on all their car headlights. The blinding white beams instantly turned the road as bright as day.
Lin Mo squinted. She lowered the hand she was using to shield her eyes, which were still struggling to adjust to the glare.
The taxi driver couldn't help but feel scared. "Little girl, do you want me to call the police for you?"
Lin Mo turned back and gave the driver a smile. "Thank you, sir, but that won't be necessary."
The taxi driver drove away, looking back every few steps.
The group watched as the slender girl stood not far away. Their gazes couldn't help but converge on her. The girl had fair skin, a pair of incredibly beautiful, long legs, and her ink-black hair was tied into a ponytail. She wore a simple hoodie, but even that couldn't hide her stunning appearance. She possessed a cold, aloof temperament, and this composed, distant air made her stand out exceptionally.
"No wonder they say Lin Hen's sister is the school beauty; she really is pretty."
"A little beauty, tsk tsk, so young, so tender."
"It's a pity we're here to crush the flower."
The group watched Lin Mo with a mix of mock pity and keen interest. They couldn't help but feel it was a shame. But who told her to have a brother like that jerk Lin Hen? An eye for an eye, sister for brother—that was only fair, right?
