Chapter 31: Keke the Lucky Star
Chapter 31: Lucky Keke
During their rest, Xu Yi lit a fire. The remaining rabbit meat needed to be reheated before it could be eaten. In the wilderness, food hygiene is of paramount importance. Whenever possible, one should avoid eating cold food.
"Daddy, this stone is so long! It looks just like our wood knife."
Huh? I was just thinking that finding a long stone shard would require the luck of a god, and yet my daughter just found one for me? Did she activate a "Luck Goddess" system?
[Hahaha, Number 1's expression is hilarious; he's completely baffled by our Keke.]
[Seriously, the daughter's luck is explosive! Finding a stone shard like that is practically a gift from heaven.]
[Confirmed: Keke is definitely a lucky charm.]
"Daddy?" Su Keke handed the stone shard to him and called out.
"Yes, Keke, you are truly amazing." Xu Yi took the shard, feeling as though it were a masterpiece crafted by God. It was perfectly straight and razor-sharp. Entirely black, it truly resembled a machete. Does such a stone blade even exist in nature?
Xu Yi used his X-ray vision to examine it and discovered it had no cracks; its structure was remarkably stable. It was over 50 centimeters long, with one end about three fingers wide and the other about two fingers wide, making it perfect for gripping. The stone blade felt quite heavy in his hand.
Xu Yi swung it at a nearby shrub to test its sharpness, and the shrub was instantly severed. The chat feed was flooded with "66666."
Xu Yi looked at the stone blade in his hand and grinned. "Keke, you’ve done a great service. With this, things will be much easier for us from now on." He was overjoyed; with this stone machete, their efficiency would improve significantly. "You roast the meat; I'm going to cut a piece of wood to make a handle."
The grip area was also quite sharp, so he needed to clamp it between two pieces of wood for a better hold. Carrying the stone machete, Xu Yi selected a small, suitable sapling.
"This stone blade is powerful, rivaling a steel one. It’s just quite heavy, maybe five or six pounds." In three swings, Xu Yi had cut down the sapling, which was as thick as his arm. After felling it, he cut it into two sections—a short one for crafting the handle and a long one to serve as a base for carving.
"It really is sharp, and the weight has its advantages. Look at this cross-section; it’s very clean." Xu Yi leveled both ends of the short piece and then split it down the middle. He thinned the two resulting planks until they were the right width, leaving only fine adjustments to be made.
Nearby, Su Keke had already finished heating the rabbit meat. They split it evenly and ate. After finishing, Xu Yi used the stone machete to strip a piece of snakeskin over a meter long. He used it to wrap the wooden handle, making it more comfortable to hold and reducing friction on his hands while working.
Once finished, Xu Yi showed the stone machete to the audience. "This is a very nice stone machete. With this and the stone axe, Keke and I will have a much easier time." He didn't intend to throw away the previous, dull stone knife. "I plan to look around nearby to see if there are any other stone shards. Stone blades wear down easily, so having spares is a good idea. Plus, I want to make a stone hoe; that would be perfect if I can find the right material. In our Stone Age, there were tools like stone hoes and pickaxes, so we need these basic agricultural implements too."
"Keke, let's look for some thinner stone shards. The shape isn't very important." Shapes can be altered; after all, it’s just stone, not steel—it lacks malleability. If struck with enough force, it will simply shatter.
The two began rummaging through a pile of rocks. "Look, here’s a big one!" Xu Yi quickly made a discovery and picked it up.
[Wow, Number 1, your luck isn't bad either! A stone shard this big could make two stone hoes with material to spare!]
[Number 1 has fully entered the Stone Age; many other challengers don't even have a decent stone axe. The gap is huge.]
[With little Miss Lucky Keke, 100 days will be a breeze.]
[Uh, Number 1, the shard you picked up is way too brittle—you broke it just by using your hand?]
"You see? This kind of stone is too brittle. It shattered the moment I pressed it; it's useless." Xu Yi tossed the shard aside and continued searching. It seemed Keke had used up her good luck for the day, as they only found more of the fragile stone that held no value.
After an hour, Xu Yi decided to give up. Continuing would likely yield no results and only waste more time. He took Su Keke and resumed their journey, as they still hadn't secured dinner, and there were no signs of animal activity nearby.
[Number 1, there's an animal skeleton ahead. Looks quite large.]
[There should be animal activity nearby then, right? Is dinner sorted?]
[I feel like Keke didn't get enough for lunch; hope we find dinner soon.]
As the audience spoke, Xu Yi spotted the skeleton too. "Keke, there's an animal skeleton over there. Let's take a look; maybe there's something we can use." He led her toward the remains.
"Daddy, what kind of animal is this?" Su Keke touched the bleached bones. They had been decaying for a long time and had no odor. The skeleton wasn't complete, only a partial frame, but the skull remained. Xu Yi took a look and saw the animal had very sharp, serrated teeth.
"Could this be dinosaur bones?" Xu Yi wasn't certain; he didn't know much about skeletal anatomy. "Yeah, it’s probably a dinosaur, a small carnivorous species. Judging by the size, it's about as big as a sika deer." Xu Yi noticed the short legs; it was likely the carcass of a theropod.
Finding dinosaur remains in this jungle was not a good sign. It meant dinosaurs were active here. Even small dinosaurs were extremely dangerous. Looking at those teeth, Xu Yi knew this was a ferocious predator. Furthermore, the bones showed clear signs of being bitten and torn apart. The unknown creature capable of hunting a dinosaur and snapping its bones was even more terrifying!
This jungle was far more dangerous than Xu Yi had imagined. Should he still keep taking Su Keke deeper in search of water?
