Chapter 3: This Baby Can Do It (Please Vote!)
“Daddy, look, here are some ground loquats.”
“Ground loquats? Are they edible?” Xu Yi crouched down and saw Su Keke holding a red fruit.
“Yes, we often pick them up on the mountain. They’re sweet and very tasty.”
As she spoke, Su Keke’s small hands brushed aside the leaves.
Ground loquats, also known as ground loquat or earth fruit, grow right at the base of the ground.
[Cool, contestant number one is about to be eliminated soon. At this age, he’s not even as good as little Keke.]
[With this level, how dare number one even participate in the challenge?]
[I think number one didn’t even realize the situation and just agreed to join. Weren’t the previous dozens all like this?]
[Number one doesn’t look like a father at all. Is this daughter adopted?]
[No, just now number one said Keke is his goddaughter, adopted by the village.]
Looking up at the comments, his neck stiffened.
Xu Yi glanced a few times and then gave up.
“Daddy, let’s weave a basket, or else we can’t carry them all.”
Because there were many ground loquats, the two of them picked quite a few.
But they had nothing to put them in.
The vegetation here was dense; taking off clothes could easily injure the skin.
The conditions were uncertain, and wounds could easily get infected.
Without antibiotics, a severe infection might even be fatal.
Hearing Su Keke’s suggestion, Xu Yi felt quite embarrassed.
“Daddy can’t weave baskets, let’s just use clothes to carry them,” he said, preparing to take off his shirt.
“Keke can do it. Grandpa, the village chief, taught me. It’s very simple.”
“Daddy, go get some of those small vines, the ones on that tree over there. Get plenty.”
Xu Yi patted Su Keke’s head happily. “Then you stay here; Daddy will go fetch the vines.”
There were many vines here, of various kinds.
Xu Yi picked one with especially good toughness. After pulling for a while, his hands began to blister.
Hands unused to farm work are just so fragile.
But Xu Yi didn’t give up and continued to gather several bundles.
To survive in the wild, you have to be tough on yourself, or you won’t last even a few days.
“How’s this? Is this enough?”
Xu Yi brought the vines to Su Keke’s side and asked.
“It’s enough. We can make a small frame now.”
Su Keke then asked him to fetch some thicker vines to serve as the basket’s frame.
Once the materials were ready, Su Keke got to work.
“This isn’t hard. Daddy should be able to learn after watching once.”
“Alright, I’ll give it a try.”
Xu Yi thought his eyes might learn to follow, but his mind and hands were another matter.
Su Keke formed a rectangular shape with the vine, rounding the two ends.
Then she placed some over-a-meter-long vines beneath the rectangle, dividing it into several sections.
Next, she used vine bark to fasten the rectangle and the vines together.
Finally, she wove thin vines crosswise through the frame.
Though only six years old, her movements were surprisingly skillful.
“Keke, do you only do these things in the village? Teacher Wang said you studied with her, right?”
When Xu Yi first went to Keke’s village, she wasn’t yet in school. Their village was very poor — no kindergartens at all.
She had been raised by her grandmother.
So Xu Yi gave some money to Teacher Wang, who took over his teaching role, to teach Su Keke some basics.
That way, when Xu Yi brought Su Keke to the big city, she could keep up.
“Yes, I’ve learned these on weekends and evenings. I behave well during school too.”
Xu Yi gently patted Su Keke’s head, feeling a pang of guilt.
“I should have brought you out earlier these past years.”
Su Keke shook her head.
“I’m happy in the village. I have many friends, and I can help Grandma with chores.”
[Such a sensible little girl. My daughter is 11 and only cares about playing and money.]
[Kids raised in the mountains do have some advantage here. At least they know what’s edible.]
[I grew up in a village too, doing farm work from a young age. It’s been over thirty years now. Seeing her reminds me of my younger self.]
[A six-year-old already outperforms me. I thought without dinosaurs, they’d be eliminated quickly, but now maybe they can survive a few more days.]
[Looks like number one can survive longer with little Keke’s help. I wonder what the survival rules are.]
[Almost there, over 9,000 contestants now. We'll know the rules soon.]
[Now the real veterans are entering. The first few hundred were all ordinary people.]
“My basket looks ugly, but it works,” Xu Yi said, dissatisfied as he looked at his own handiwork.
Su Keke’s weaving was much more delicate than his.
“Daddy’s amazing! You got it on the first try, but Keke had to practice three times.”
Embarrassed by the praise, Xu Yi scratched his head.
His basket was just a small one, while Su Keke’s was a proper rattan basket.
He loaded nearly seven or eight pounds of ground loquats into the basket, slinging it over his shoulder.
Su Keke carried the small basket Xu Yi made, and the two continued moving.
They had to find a water source.
Without water, survival was impossible.
“Ten thousand contestants have entered. The survival challenge officially begins.”
“The survival challenge has no time limit. It ends only when five contestants remain.”
“There is only one way to leave this challenge—death. Death reduces one-third of your lifespan and returns you to the original world.”
“Survive 100 days to earn a rejuvenation elixir that restores the user to age 20 and maintains it for 10 years.”
“Survive 200 days to earn a rejuvenation elixir that maintains age 20 for 20 years.”
“And so on, with the highest reward being an elixir maintaining youth for 200 years.”
“The last five challengers gain access to this parallel world.”
“The challenge is now officially underway!”
[I regret it so much, my guts hurt. Why did I refuse?!]
[Same regret x100,000,000!]
“Wow, are the rewards really this good? Rejuvenation?”
“Maintaining age 20 for 200 years? That means living at least 300 years!”
“No way, this is like immortality!”
“Could such black technology really exist?”
“The live stream hasn’t been shut down. Sending ten thousand people to a parallel world with dinosaurs means the technology is beyond human imagination. Why doubt it?”
“I’d pay two billion for that elixir.”
Upon hearing this reward, participants weren’t very excited.
But the wealthy viewers watching the live stream were all stirred.
Rejuvenation, maintaining age twenty for ten years—it was worth billions, even hundreds of billions.
A hundred days of survival shouldn’t be too hard, right?
With ten thousand people, plenty of ten-year elixirs could be obtained.
This news drove the world’s wealthy mad.
After all, young rich people are rare.
Moreover, if someone could unlock the secret of the elixir, they could gain even greater wealth and control the world.
The numbers are bleak, sob sob! Please give some votes to cheer me up!
