Chapter 16: He Can Sleep Until Dawn (Please Vote)
The jungle at night was quite lively.
From time to time, various calls echoed through the darkness.
Yet, it was impossible to tell what kind of animals were making those sounds.
Of course, based on distance, one could distinguish some of them.
Su Keke was worried that Xu Yi might be awakened by these noises.
But clearly, her concern was unnecessary.
Not only was he not disturbed by the calls, he wasn’t even roused by the alarm clock.
Su Keke listened as the alarm stopped, then glanced at Xu Yi.
[“Keke, hurry and wake your dad up; don’t let him oversleep.”]
[“Yeah, if he keeps sleeping, he’ll sleep right through the night.”]
[“So anxious! How do I send a voice message? Feels like Keke’s vocabulary is limited.”]
Actually, Su Keke knew quite a few characters.
Though she didn’t understand some, she could roughly guess their meaning.
So she understood some of the comments urging her to wake Xu Yi.
“Should I really wake Dad up?”
Su Keke hesitated. She felt Xu Yi was sleeping soundly and was reluctant to disturb him.
Besides, her own eyelids were heavy; she was barely holding herself awake.
She didn’t know how much longer she could stay awake, or if she might fall asleep soon too.
[“You’re almost asleep yourself; that’s even more dangerous. Hurry and wake him.”]
“Oh, okay, I’ll try.”
Su Keke thought the person had a point.
She went over and gently shook Xu Yi.
At first, he didn’t wake. She shook him again.
Like a spring, Xu Yi suddenly sat up.
His hand quickly reached for his spear, and he scanned the surroundings.
About twenty meters away, a large bird perched on a tree.
Xu Yi guessed it was probably an owl.
Just as he prepared to try throwing the spear, it flew off.
Looking around carefully, no other animals were nearby.
Then Xu Yi understood why Su Keke had woken him.
“Dad must have overslept. Sorry about that—I’m a very heavy sleeper.”
“All right, you can get some rest now. Dad’s wide awake.”
Xu Yi stood and went to the campfire, stirring the flames to make them burn brighter.
Su Keke lay down where Xu Yi had been sleeping, feeling very warm.
Her spear was placed by her side.
“Good night, Dad.”
Xu Yi replied sweetly, “Good night, little darling. Go to sleep quickly.”
Xu Yi sat by the fire for a while, feeling a bit bored, so he picked up a stone knife and resumed sharpening it.
At first, he would sharpen a bit, then glance at Su Keke.
After observing for a while and hearing no disturbance, he focused on sharpening.
He worked off and on all through the night.
No animals came near during the night.
After a whole night of sharpening, the improvement was not very noticeable.
After all, the stone wasn’t a proper whetstone.
Still, effort always brings some reward.
Xu Yi believed that with more time, he could make it sharper.
“How did you sleep?”
Seeing Su Keke awake, Xu Yi smiled faintly.
“Very well! Dad, are you tired?”
Su Keke stood and stretched, feeling full of energy.
“Not tired, still very alert.”
Saying that, Xu Yi picked up the stone knife he had sharpened overnight and prepared to cut a water vine.
Waking up and drinking some water was a healthy routine.
Besides, he needed water to clean the snake skin he had smoked the previous night.
“It’s definitely easier to cut now. I can continue tonight.”
“Keke, come rinse your mouth and drink some water.”
Without toothbrushes, rinsing was the best they could do.
Su Keke ran over, cupped some water in her mouth, swished her fingers inside briefly, then spat it out.
Xu Yi knew ash from plants could be used for brushing teeth, but only when water was abundant.
Otherwise, having ash in the mouth was unpleasant.
After both drank some water, Xu Yi asked Su Keke to bring the snake skin.
Turning the inner side out, Xu Yi poured water from the water vine into the snake skin.
There was still quite a bit of water in the vine—about two hundred milliliters.
That should be enough to clean the snake skin.
Xu Yi pinched the opening, stretched it straight, and poured the water back and forth inside to rinse it.
After dozens of repetitions, he released the opening and let the water flow out.
“That should be clean enough.”
He brought it close to his nose and sniffed.
“There’s definitely no fishy smell. Just a smoky scent.”
“Let’s go collect more water. Once it’s full, we’ll set out to find a water source.”
The two of them worked busily for over an hour, cutting all the water vines.
They collected nearly two liters of water.
The entire snake skin pouch swelled considerably, making Xu Yi worry it might burst.
After tying the opening securely, Xu Yi carefully placed it in the basket.
Once they confirmed all flames were extinguished, they continued in the direction they had chosen yesterday.
Having a compass was a great advantage—they wouldn’t wander in circles or take unnecessary detours in the forest.
“This probably isn’t a tropical rainforest. It’s already the third day, and we haven’t seen any palm trees or banana plants.”
[“Number One, after all, this is a parallel world. They may never have evolved.”]
[“Number One, the temperature here is still quite high, but the humidity is low. It doesn’t really feel like a rainforest.”]
[“But Number One is definitely in a broadleaf forest. There are many vines and some rainforest-like features.”]
[“You can only say that in a parallel world, you can’t just apply our existing knowledge.”]
Xu Yi read the lively discussion in the livestream chat with mixed feelings.
If only he knew as much as they did, survival might be easier.
However, he noticed his physical strength was clearly better than yesterday.
He suspected this was related to his increasing power.
“There seem to be fewer animals; we haven’t encountered any along the way.”
As noon approached, Xu Yi grew anxious.
What would they eat for lunch?
That was a big problem.
There weren’t many loquats left—nowhere near enough for both of them.
Having eaten meat last night, he wanted some more.
Unfortunately, they hadn’t seen a single animal, not even a chance to strike.
“Why is this jungle so poor in resources?”
“Is it the same in other livestreams?”
Xu Yi had held back asking before, afraid of disappointment.
Now, he felt the blow didn’t matter.
What mattered was knowing the general situation to decide whether to develop a vegetarian recipe.
Currently, out of ten thousand challengers, only 6,329 remained.
Such a high elimination rate definitely wasn’t due to starvation alone.
