Chapter 108: Beep—A Good Person Card
Half an hour later, the music festival officially began.
Though the stage was hidden from view, a sweet voice announced the start. As her words faded, a magnificent fireworks display erupted behind the stage. From crimson hearts to blooming flowers, the crackles and booms echoed across the night sky. Huge, dazzling bursts in every color unfurled like roses blossoming overhead.
Lin Ning gazed up, entranced. These tiny stars seemed so near, as if he could reach out and touch them—yet they remained impossibly distant.
A song came to his mind: "Bubbles." With a small alteration, its lyrics perfectly suited the moment—no matter how beautiful the fireworks, they vanish in an instant.
He had assumed the fireworks were the grand finale, but to his surprise, an even more spectacular display followed. Vivid colors exploded, beams of light shot skyward. For a moment, nothing happened; the crowd began to murmur, some even mocking the lackluster finish. Suddenly, the darkened sky burst alive again as lotus flowers, roses, and other blooms of every kind unfurled in tandem.
The blossoms competed to outshine each other in the heavens.
The onlookers erupted in cheers. In the crowd, a young man dropped to one knee the moment the roses bloomed, proposing to his beloved in front of everyone.
This spectacle sent the atmosphere soaring to its peak.
Lin Yu noticed many people raising their phones to record. He spotted a young woman with a striking figure and pleasant features, standing before the newly engaged couple, holding her phone high—she seemed to be livestreaming the event.
The fireworks alone were breathtaking, but the live proposal sent the excitement sky-high. More than ten thousand viewers flooded into her stream, the scrolling comments shifting from exclamations to an endless stream of congratulations.
Lin Yu wandered closer for a look. After a round of the streamer’s sweet, playful banter, several high-level viewers showered her with virtual gifts, making her eyes crinkle with laughter.
He was stunned—this single livestream could have brought in nearly a hundred thousand yuan. With online streaming just beginning to boom, the first wave of internet celebrities were reaping the rewards of novelty and curiosity. Those future-famous streamers who rose to fame in these years had already cashed out, living in villas, driving luxury cars, enjoying colorful lives.
The music festival’s audience was mostly made up of university students from the nearby campus and a few office workers. After the fireworks, the stage shifted to a warm-up set, lights of every color illuminating the night and heating up the crowd.
Standing among them, Lin Yu noticed couples kissing, holding hands, or embracing as the lights flickered—pink bubbles everywhere, love filling the air.
The streamer giggled, thanking a top supporter for a grand gift. At his request, she turned her camera to show the festival’s atmosphere.
Lin Yu quickly slipped out of her frame. Even though he wore a mask and cap to conceal himself, he knew sharp eyes might recognize him, and that could lead to trouble.
A popular female influencer took the stage next. Her sweet singing voice was well-known online, but her attempt at rapping was a chaotic mess, her voice cracking repeatedly. Fans insisted the microphone was at fault, while detractors mocked her as needing a master sound engineer.
She was soon booed off the stage, replaced by a moderately famous singer who stepped in to save the show. Lin Yu, distracted by the flurry of gifts in the stream, didn’t catch the new singer’s identity.
When viewers requested a look at the singer's face, the streamer pretended her connection was lagging, not wanting to lose attention. As the singer left the stage, she pouted in mock disappointment, acting aggrieved and coaxing more gifts from her admirers.
All around, people waved their hands. The sparkling wristbands glowed in changing colors, creating seas of light in support of different singers and influencers.
Lin Yu marveled at how he’d missed this new phenomenon—he felt momentarily out of touch with the younger generation. Just then, someone waved a glowing wristband before his eyes.
He looked down and saw a petite girl, perhaps one and a half meters tall, her wrist looped through a basket brimming with wristbands. Her eyes sparkled like stars as she gazed up at Lin Yu.
“Hey, want a wristband? They’re not expensive, and I’ll give you a twenty percent discount!”
She was a natural salesperson—her words were sweet, her tone playful and coy. Most guys would have surrendered immediately and bought one.
With the din around them and their difference in height, Lin Yu barely caught her words. He feigned confusion, pointing to himself.
“Are you saying good looks get a fifty percent discount?”
She pouted. “But with your mask and hat, I can’t tell how handsome you are!”
“But you must be at least one-eighty tall, right? So tall!”
Her mouth kept moving, but a sudden blast of music made Lin Yu miss what she said. He leaned in, “What—did—you—say?”
She stood on tiptoe, took a deep breath, and shouted, “I—said—buy—a—wristband—it—will—make—you—even—cooler!”
Seeing the effort she put in, her face turning red, Lin Yu could only smile and shake his head—if he’d wanted to buy, he’d have scanned her code already.
“Sorry—I—don’t—want—one—”
Perhaps she hadn’t heard, or perhaps she was just persistent. She slipped a new wristband onto his wrist and flicked the switch, bathing him in blue light. Then she took out a pair of cat ears and motioned for him to crouch. Standing on tiptoe, she carefully placed them on his head.
“Now you’re even cooler!”
“You must be at least one-eighty, right? With your build, you’re definitely a top-tier guy. Why are you hiding yourself?”
Lin Yu gave a startled grunt. Even with his disguise, she could tell he was handsome?
Did she have x-ray vision or something?
“Sorry to disappoint, but I’m a platypus.”
The girl blinked in confusion. Huh? But with a figure like his, he didn’t look like a platypus at all.
Her eyes were so beautiful, sparkling like the stars. Could it be that under the mask lay a flat, duck-like bill? That…
For a moment, disappointment flickered in her gaze, but she quickly hid it, her smile just as sweet—a true sales pro.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a platypus! No matter how handsome a person is, if their heart isn’t beautiful, no one will like them!”
“I can tell at a glance you’re a good guy! So you’ll definitely help a poor college student working part-time, right?”
There it was—the good guy card.
Lin Yu looked at her adorable expression, wanting to protest, but found himself at a loss for words.
Such is the world: beauty always has its privileges.
