Chapter 41: Xu Qiao's Method
Chapter 41: Xu Qiao's Plan
Approaching her father was completely out of the question; given the current circumstances, he would never believe her.
This was entirely different from her father in her past life. Back then, although she was equally willful and spoiled, it was only displayed in front of her parents, and she never crossed any boundaries. Consequently, her relationship with them was very close, and she could count on their absolute, unconditional trust.
If she went to him now, he might even suspect she had ulterior motives and launch an investigation into Monitor Wu, ultimately turning a good intention into a disaster.
Since her parents were unavailable, the only person she could turn to was her younger brother.
In her memories, although this younger brother was not yet an adult, he possessed the maturity of an old soul and an exceptionally high IQ. Unlike Xu Qiao, who had merely scraped through university, he had skipped grades and entered university ahead of her, and he was now on the verge of graduation. Moreover, he had been involved in the family business during his college years, and his competence was undeniable.
If he were willing to help, Monitor Wu’s predicament would appear as trivial as dust in his eyes.
She had been careless about this oversight today and secretly warned herself to be much more careful in the future.
His response was more or less expected. She gave a faint smile and then said, "Xu Gao, I have... a favor to ask of you this time."
Xu Gao still seemed unable to snap out of his dazed state. Hearing her words, he asked instinctively, "Really?"
This note of concern made Xu Gao feel a bit awkward, but he still replied ungraciously, "Without you around to infuriate them, they are doing just fine."
She took a deep breath. "What do you want me to investigate? Just that accident?"
"Whether you believe it or not, I am genuinely trying to change. Besides, I've been busy brushing up on the skills I lagged behind in lately."
Xu Qiao wasn't angry; instead, she chuckled. "Why? Am I not allowed to turn over a new leaf?"
Upon hearing this response, Xu Qiao immediately smiled. "I knew you would find a way."
She only managed to find the opportunity to go back and visit them once every few months, but things were fine.
"However, I still feel somewhat unreconciled. Could you have your people look into it on the side and see if anything else turns up?"
Xu Qiao could hear the disdain in his tone, but since he hadn't hung up the phone, she took it as his consent and hurriedly added, "Actually, this isn't really to help me, but to help a monitor of mine."
Realizing something was amiss the moment the words left her mouth, she blurted out, "You didn't go stirring up trouble again, did you?"
Before he could react, she immediately continued, "Since you're having someone look into him, how about doing me a favor and checking out a few other people while you're at it?"
This was something Xu Qiao truly hadn't anticipated.
Xu Gao seemed to have finally regained his wits just as he heard her words, and he immediately let out a cold snort. "You certainly have the nerve to say that! You haven't called in so long, don't you know Mom has been worried sick about you?"
Thinking about this, she checked her phone, saw the battery was sufficiently charged, and quickly made the call.
Her flurry of apologies and explanations only succeeded in baffling Xu Gao further. "Xu... You... Did your brain get caught in a door?"
"What? Are you... finding this troublesome?" Prompted by his question, Xu Qiao felt a slight wave of uncertainty.
She quickly explained Monitor Wu's situation. "Although his severance pay is enough to cover his child's medical treatments, his livelihood afterward remains unsecured."
There was a sudden pause on the other end of the line. "Why... are you suddenly calling back?"
"Xu Qiao?" A hesitant voice came from the opposite end, sounding as if it couldn't quite believe the call was from her.
Fortunately, Xu Gao broke the silence by asking, "Is that the only reason you're calling me?"
"If he spent that many years in the Special Forces, he would be a perfect fit for our company."
Xu Qiao ignored his remark and asked instead, "Are you and... Mom and Dad doing well?"
"What do you mean by 'suddenly calling'?" Xu Qiao sighed helplessly. "I haven't been in touch for a while, isn't it completely normal to make a phone call to let you know I'm safe?"
She quickly smoothed things over. "I'm sorry, Xu Gao. I've genuinely been too busy lately and haven't had the time to call you all."
What does it feel like when an older sister suddenly becomes sharp and clever? If Xu Gao had the chance to ask this online, he would definitely want an answer.
Listening to the silence on the other end, Xu Qiao instinctively checked to see if the call had been disconnected.
"Forget about high-paying jobs; even ordinary ones are hard to come by. I don't want to see a man like that resort to delivering food or working on a factory assembly line."
"So, can you help him find a suitable job? Also... I don't know what kind of illness his child has, or whether the current hospital is the right place for treatment."
Hearing this, Xu Qiao pictured his deliberately aloof expression and smiled lightly. "You should call me Elder Sister."
"But that traffic accident case was already closed. Even the police couldn't unearth anything."
She had already taken over Xu Qiao's body, her family, and their familial affection in this world, so it was only right that she treated them well.
"But Monitor Wu has injuries on his body; doing any more rough-and-tumble work is probably out of the question," Xu Qiao said instinctively.
Xu Qiao paused for a moment before saying, "That traffic accident from before... I've always felt something was off. It might not be easy to investigate now that so much time has passed."
Upon hearing this, Xu Gao felt an immediate surge of bad premonition. "I knew you wouldn't be kind enough to suddenly care about us out of the goodness of your heart."
Xu Gao sighed. "No, I can have someone look into his situation first, and then... our family happens to be setting up a security company and is short on talent in that exact field."
"If we can help, could we also help him find a more suitable hospital?"
"Investigating the accident alone won't yield anything," Xu Qiao said without hesitation. "But you can investigate people—those people... who usually interacted with me."
After a brief thought, she stated firmly, "Then have him come work as an instructor with us. His experience is more than enough for the position, and he can help us train a batch of elite security personnel."
"He's a veteran special forces soldier, but having spent all those years in the military, he knows nothing besides the skills to kill enemies."
In her past life, although she had a good relationship with her parents, after leaving home to join the military, she strictly avoided using phone calls whenever possible so as not to disrupt their lives or bring unnecessary danger to their doorstep.
"What kind of game are you trying to play this time?" Xu Gao asked, his tone no longer filled with sheer doubt, but still tinged with deep skepticism.
Xu Gao clearly hadn't expected her to ask for this kind of favor, and for a moment, he was left speechless.
If Xu Gao had held any doubts before, hearing this statement finally set his mind at ease.
"Those... friends of yours?" Hearing this, Xu Gao grew even more astonished, his voice cracking slightly.
Xu Qiao answered without a second thought, "Yes, exactly them!"
Xu Gao was now thoroughly convinced that her brain must have been caught in a door. Still, this turned out to be a good thing; if it took a few more bumps to knock some sense into her, he wouldn't mind at all.
Given that every single thing she had asked for was for a righteous cause, Xu Gao found no grounds for refusal. Not only did he agree, but he also resolved to handle the matters thoroughly.
