Chapter 122: Huang Yu's Parents Pay a Visit
A few weeks passed in the blink of an eye.
Inside Villa No. 12 of the Dragon Lake villa complex, the living room was quiet. Peng Min was lying comfortably on the sofa, feeling the cool breeze while watching an anime on the large LCD television. Huang Yu had gone out due to an urgent matter at the research institute.
She was engrossed in the show when she suddenly felt a wave of nausea. She quickly grabbed a preserved plum from a dish nearby and ate it, which helped suppress the urge to vomit and made her feel much better. Just a few days ago, Peng Min had begun experiencing a series of pregnancy symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, fatigue, drowsiness, and dizziness.
"Ding-dong. Ding-dong."
Suddenly, the doorbell at the villa's main entrance rang.
"Who could that be?" Peng Min wondered. She paused the anime and stood up to walk toward the door. Usually, when Huang Yu returned, he would let himself in and never rang the bell. Dr. Thomas had also left three days ago to return to his home country.
She looked at the small monitor by the door, which displayed the scene outside the villa. A man in his thirties with a stern expression and a professional suit stood at the gate, pressing the bell. Behind him stood a man and a woman.
The man looked to be about forty years old; he was well-dressed, composed, and strikingly handsome. His features bore a five- or six-part resemblance to Huang Yu. It was none other than Huang Yu’s father, Huang Tianhua. Beside him was a gentle, beautiful noblewoman whose brow and expression were identical to Huang Yu’s. She was his mother, Du Dan.
Even though Peng Min had never met Huang Yu’s parents, she guessed their identities the moment she saw them.
"Ding-dong, ding-dong..." The man in the suit continued to press the bell.
Peng Min’s heart raced. She had no desire to meet Huang Yu’s parents alone. "How did they find this place? Huang Yu had no reason to tell them, and even if he did, he would have notified me first. Why?" she thought to herself. The persistent ringing sounded like a death knell.
She frantically looked for her phone but realized she had left it on the sofa. Instead of opening the door, she ran back to the living room, grabbed her phone, and dialed Huang Yu’s number.
The call was answered quickly.
"Yu, someone is outside the villa. It's a middle-aged couple. They look like your parents," Peng Min said, her voice trembling with panic before he could even speak.
"Minmin, don't panic. Tell me clearly—are you sure it's them? They should still be abroad," Huang Yu said, sounding equally surprised.
"Yu, never mind that now. They keep ringing the doorbell. Should I open it or not?" she asked urgently. As she spoke, she felt as if the ringing became more rapid, as if expressing impatience.
"Minmin, stay calm. Don't worry, the villa’s security is excellent; they aren't bad people. Even if it is my parents, don't be afraid. They are very approachable and easygoing. Don’t keep them waiting outside; let them in and host them. I’ll tell my supervisor and head back immediately," Huang Yu said, sensing her anxiety.
After hearing this, Peng Min felt a bit more reassured.
"Hurry back," she said before hanging up. She took a deep breath and went to open the door.
At the main gate of the villa courtyard, Peng Min stood behind the iron gate, looking at the three people outside. She focused her gaze on the middle-aged couple behind the man in the suit. She was now more than eighty percent sure they were Huang Yu’s parents.
"You must be Peng Min. You’re a bit better-looking than in the photos, but still quite ordinary. How did my son settle for you?" Du Dan said, looking Peng Min up and down with a critical gaze.
Peng Min was rendered speechless. In terms of beauty, she knew she wasn’t a stunning woman, and compared to the elegant Du Dan, she fell short in every way. Her only advantage was her youth.
Beside her, Huang Tianhua coughed slightly, signaling for Du Dan not to be so blunt. Du Dan curled her lip and stopped speaking, though her eyes remained fixed on Peng Min, clearly showing her dissatisfaction.
"Hello, we are Huang Yu’s parents. We came today primarily to see you. Let’s go inside and talk," Huang Tianhua said.
Peng Min opened the gate and led them into the villa.
In the living room, Peng Min felt like she was sitting on pins and needles. She kept wondering when Huang Yu would return; she didn't want to face his parents alone. After all, the owners of the prosperous Han Palace Nightclub were certainly not the "approachable and easygoing" people Huang Yu described.
She didn't dare speak first. She simply poured tea for Huang Tianhua and Du Dan, then sat down, waiting to be reprimanded.
"My son's drug addiction—that started because of you, didn't it?" Huang Tianhua asked, taking a sip of tea and looking at Peng Min with a cold, piercing gaze. Du Dan also stared at her coldly.
"Ah?" Peng Min was stunned, unsure how to respond. She hadn't expected him to be so direct.
"I..." Before she could finish, Huang Tianhua cut her off.
"I know what you want to say, but before you speak, I must remind you that I have investigated everything about you, including your family. I don't want to hear a single lie from your mouth, Miss Peng. Do you understand?"
He and Du Dan had been enjoying a vacation when they heard about Huang Yu’s situation and rushed back. They had come fully prepared. The two of them exerted a suffocating pressure on her.
Suddenly, she felt nauseated again. She instinctively covered her mouth and grabbed a preserved plum from the tea table to hold in her mouth, suppressing the urge to vomit.
Huang Tianhua and Du Dan watched this scene in surprise. Huang Tianhua glanced at Du Dan, his eyes questioning. Having been married for years, Du Dan understood him immediately. She shook her head, then looked at Peng Min, as if confirming something.
"Are you pregnant?" Du Dan asked directly, noting that it didn't look like an act.
"Yes," Peng Min nodded, looking down, afraid to meet their eyes.
"Is it Xiaoyu's?" Du Dan pressed.
"Yes," Peng Min nodded again, still unable to look up. She knew that because of what Huang Tianhua had said earlier, they had investigated her entire family. If that were true, not only was she in danger, but her parents were as well. Her only leverage was the child in her womb and Huang Yu. Even if they hadn't asked, she would have found an opportunity to tell them.
After receiving confirmation, the couple exchanged glances, their expressions shifting several times.
"Peng Min, how far along are you?" Huang Tianhua asked, his tone softening slightly.
"I found out a few weeks ago. It’s been almost a month," Peng Min replied, finally daring to look up.
"Haha, good! Xiaoyu has never shown much interest in women since he was a child. I was worried he wasn't interested in girls at all. I never imagined he’d be a father now. Oh, and if he’s a father, that makes me a grandfather!" Huang Tianhua laughed heartily.
However, a moment later, he caught himself, his smile fading as he looked at Peng Min with a grave expression, lost in thought.
Du Dan, whose own face had brightened, noticed her husband’s change in mood and knew exactly what he was thinking. He was deeply dissatisfied with her. He simply did not accept this woman as his daughter-in-law.
Du Dan felt the same. She had seen the investigation report: in middle school, Peng Min was a notorious rebel who performed poorly and got into early relationships. In high school, she attended a vocational school in YL County—a place for the lowest-performing students, notorious for its chaotic environment.
According to the report, Peng Min had three boyfriends in vocational school and had stayed in hotels with all of them. After graduating, she had run away from home to PE City to live with an online boyfriend for several months, during which she had been pregnant once. That child had been lost after her boyfriend sold her to a nightclub, where she became addicted to drugs.
Following that, she worked as a hostess at the club for six months, during which she had entertained no fewer than one hundred different men.
For any parent, accepting such a woman as a daughter-in-law was unthinkable.
