Chapter Sixty-One: Courting Death!

Watching the cry for help and hearing that clear, childish voice, it was enough to stir a man’s deepest temptation. When she even said that she would agree to anything, wasn’t that outright, shameless seduction? Liang Jing became even more certain that something was wrong.

What do you make of it?

Since he had already decided there was a problem, Liang Jing had no intention of interfering. He stood to the side as an observer, watching quietly, while signaling everyone else to stay on guard and see how the situation would develop.

What Liang Jing did not realize was that what he considered a restrained refusal to get involved looked, in the eyes of others, fiercely unusual and intimidating. By then, the so-called refugees nearby had already been panicking and dodging far away. Even though the road ahead seemed hopeless, if they did not react quickly enough, they would not just lose hope for the future; they would be dead outright.

They had seen the pursuers chasing all the way with no one daring to stop them. The only options were to yield, evade, and flatter. No one even dared to follow behind and watch from close by. For those at the very bottom, if they were even a little slow, they might not even leave bones behind.

And so an odd scene unfolded. On one side, two groups were in a chase and flight; on another, a third group stood in the road, quietly watching, as if they had no intention of getting involved. By the time Liang Jing came to his senses, the crowd had already scattered to a great distance, and the situation had turned out this way.

“Get lost, boy! Move aside and scram, or none of you are getting away…”

Seeing that their target had approached Liang Jing’s group and that the others did not even try to dodge, merely standing there and watching, the middle-aged man leading the pursuers instinctively shouted threats. He saw that the other side outnumbered them, so he decided to finish the task Young Master Tu had given him first.

Oh!

A light burst in Su Yuting’s eyes. Her heart cried out that she had not been wrong after all—the other side really had been sent by heaven to save her. Looking toward Liang Jing, who clearly seemed to be the leader, her gaze turned hot with excitement. In her mind, he had become the white knight of her dreams. She only wondered what face hid beneath that imposing, domineering mask, and whether he was handsome. Before she knew it, she had slipped into a sweet fantasy.

The originally vicious and fearsome mask now seemed powerful and overbearing instead. A woman’s judgment really could become utterly unreasonable once feelings got involved.

Hm?

Liang Jing’s expression changed. He immediately sensed that something was off, but since things had already come to this, he did not take the other man’s arrogant threats to heart. That did not mean he would yield, however. Liang Jing had never been one to tolerate threats. With his own domineering and unyielding nature, how could he possibly retreat before such arrogant people?

The word compromise had never existed in his dictionary.

“Good! So there really are fools who want to meddle. Good, very good…”

The man in the lead looked pleased. For the first time along this entire pursuit, someone had dared step forward to block them. He was so angered that he actually laughed. In truth, he had already been very polite moments ago when he asked them to move aside. He only wanted to finish Young Master Tu’s assignment quickly and claim his reward. After all, there were quite a few factions and people in this crowd hunting for that girl, and they could appear at any moment to compete for credit.

Still, now that anger had turned into laughter, he decided he did not mind wasting a little time. Those so-called forces, even if added together, were still nothing more than a drop in the ocean in a crowd of hundreds of thousands. He believed no one would catch up for the time being, so he might as well play with this group of self-righteous busybodies. They were not really Young Master Tu’s subordinates anyway—just shameless opportunists borrowing the chance to curry favor and act under his name. Since someone had actually stepped out to be trampled, he was in the mood to enjoy it.

In his mind, as long as he announced that he was acting on behalf of Young Master Tu, they would soon be begging for mercy, kowtowing, and admitting their mistake.

“Hah! You little punk, you still dare show us that look? Do you even know who we are? Are you really courting death? Hand over the woman immediately! Kneel down and beg for forgiveness!”

As the head of a small faction, the man had only ever been a nobody before the apocalypse. Today, at long last, he was able to borrow another’s prestige and strut like a dog with a master. He felt wonderfully important and shouted with what he considered great authority.

They’re done for.

Everyone in Liang Jing’s group looked at the other side as if at dead men. From those words alone, they knew enough of Liang Jing’s temperament to understand that anyone who said something like that was already beyond saving.

“Little sister, don’t be afraid. With us here, no one will hurt you. Relax. Are you still in pain anywhere? Did you injure any bones when you fell?”

Ling Qinghe no longer paid attention to the men. Instead, she turned to the two girls behind her and asked after them with concern. Women could always become close very quickly, couldn’t they?

Su Yuting was a little nervous too, afraid that the words from the other side might scare away the savior and the white knight she had finally found. She looked anxiously at Liang Jing’s back, as though waiting for fate to deliver its verdict.

“Little sister, don’t worry. They’re dead for sure. You don’t know this, but…”

Seeing their fear, helplessness, and unease, Ling Qinghe softened and took one of their hands to comfort them. She began explaining Liang Jing’s extraordinary strength and talking about some of his deeds. During this time, she had become very clear on just how monstrous Liang Jing’s physical power was, how terrifying his ability to summon the undead could be, and how he seemed able to somehow obtain all kinds of formidable equipment. In her eyes, Liang Jing was almost omnipotent, and without realizing it, she let everything spill out in front of the two girls.

She failed to notice that the younger girl’s eyes, fixed on Liang Jing’s back, were growing hotter and hotter, glimmering with a strange light, with shy tenderness surfacing from time to time. Otherwise, Ling Qinghe would have understood exactly what it meant.

Her kindness had brought her a rival. What a miserable thing. She had finally done a good deed out of righteous impulse, only to end up helping someone else steal her chance.

“Looking for death.”

Liang Jing glanced at the two girls hiding behind Ling Qinghe and felt thoroughly vexed. He had been dragged into trouble for no reason at all, and judging from the crowd’s reaction, these people likely had some real backing. He had been silent up to now, but at this moment, those two cold words came from his mouth.

Everyone behind him had been waiting for his order. The instant they heard his words, they moved at once to prove their loyalty and strength, flipping off the safeties on their guns and aiming the barrels directly at the other group.

“What, what are you doing? Don’t do anything reckless! We are—”

The middle-aged man and his men immediately realized something was wrong when they saw more than a dozen black gun barrels pointed at them. Only then did they notice that everyone on the other side was fully equipped and looked brutally capable, clearly a battle-hardened team that had seen blood. They instantly panicked and started shouting, both to threaten and to stall for time. At the same time, they signaled to their underlings to send word to Young Master Tu so that they could sit back and enjoy the show.

Whoosh!

“You—”
