Chapter Ninety-Two: Two Scarlet Bloodstreaks
Thirteen of them were enough to punch through sixty-five acupoints throughout the Meridian Realm.
At first glance, their value seemed inferior to that of Dragon Blood Vine, but on closer thought, Dragon Blood Vine was only the main ingredient of the Dragon Vein Pill. To refine that pill, dozens of auxiliary herbs were still required. Though each was worth less than Dragon Blood Vine, they were by no means cheap.
Even if all that money were spent and the main ingredient and auxiliaries were bought in full, there would still be the need to hire a renowned alchemist to refine them, which would cost yet another fortune. And even when the pill was finally completed, however potent its effects, its medicinal efficacy would only be fifty percent.
As for whether it would be fifty-something percent or sixty-something percent, that depended on fate.
So in terms of both complexity and cost, it could not compare with Earth Essence Fruit. Earth Essence Fruit could be taken directly.
If it were a wealthy household or a powerful clan that obtained Dragon Blood Vine, they might still make use of it, though the gains might not outweigh the losses. But if a poor boy got it, he could only sell it for money, unlike Earth Essence Fruit, which could be swallowed at once.
Simple, direct, and brutal.
It could easily help you break through five acupoints, so in truth, Earth Essence Fruit was worth more than Dragon Blood Vine.
Of course, because Dragon Blood Vine was a single plant and the Dragon Vein Pill was not limited to a single pill per batch, one refining might yield three pills, or perhaps ten. No one could say for sure; it depended on the alchemist.
Thus, a single Earth Essence Fruit was probably worth around four hundred thousand.
And right now, there were thirteen in Liu Hong's ring. That was worth more than five million...
At the thought of this, a faint smile curved at the corner of Lin Fan's mouth. The old saying was true: murder and arson earn a golden belt; bridge building and road repair leave no corpse behind.
Looking at Greedy Wolf, looking at Liu Hong, each and every one of them was cruel to the bone, yet powerful, high in status, and dripping with wealth.
Then look at those honest common folk, struggling their entire lives and still living in poverty, some young men unable even to afford a wife.
What did that prove?
Society was rotten to the core.
In this age of money and carnal desire, it seemed wealth ruled everything. No matter whether you were a high official or a business tycoon, as long as you had money, even if your crimes piled up like a mountain, people would still call you kind.
Even theft and prostitution were no longer looked down upon, so long as you had money.
Yet kindness and righteousness were useless. If you had no money, people would look down on you, and even relatives and friends would keep their distance.
In Lin Fan's mind, it seemed as though the memory of his former life on a world called Earth had surfaced. When he was young, he had disregarded his own life and nearly been struck to death by a car while saving a child.
He had never imagined that the child came from a wealthy family. Though that family had later thanked him, countless others had accused him of doing it for money.
In the end, even that family seemed to think the same, and had thrown a bank card at him with an air of superiority.
He had not taken it that day. He was fifteen then.
Who would have thought that Earth would later undergo a transformation, with spiritual energy awakening, and that he would become a state-defending powerhouse, only for that very family to come seeking him, bearing gifts of rare value, speaking of old kindnesses and hoping to keep in touch in the future.
Heh. Poor to the point that no one asked after you in the bustling market; rich enough to find distant relatives in the deep mountains.
This damned world, no matter which world it was, was always the same.
Money was a sacred object of merit. It elevated human civilization and kept currency flowing, no longer relying on barter, and yet it was also the source of all evil, drawing out the darkest and ugliest side of mankind.
In his former life, countless people had stolen and robbed for money. Others deceived, extorted, and ran scams. There were even inhuman beasts who trafficked children, and countless soulless monsters who murdered their own kin for insurance payouts.
Truly hideous. The root of all evil.
From beginning to end, Lin Fan had believed that every person carried both an angel and a devil within the heart.
If the angel suppressed the devil, then you were an angel. But if desire seized you and the devil suppressed the angel, then you were a devil.
If one chose to be an angel and kept a kind heart, then even if that kindness was betrayed time and again, one should not forget that one had lived in a way that was worthy of one’s own conscience.
Hoo—
Lin Fan exhaled heavily. Glancing at the patches of blood on the ground, he felt, for reasons even he could not explain, a sudden heaviness in his heart. Saying nothing, he turned and walked toward the depths of the forest.
This scene was seen by Little Gold, who had just finished a hearty meal after landing on the ground. Suddenly, its earlier excitement from devouring the two Meridian-Opening Realm experts vanished.
With a flicker of movement, it leaped onto Lin Fan's shoulder and gently rubbed its head against his cheek.
"I'm fine..."
Lin Fan's voice came from afar, growing fainter and fainter, until at last he disappeared into the depths of the forest.
...
A piercing hiss echoed from within a mountain cave.
There, a two-foot-long snow-white little serpent writhed and hissed toward the sky, its entire body twisting in agony. Its two snow-white fleshy wings occasionally flapped, lifting it into the air before brutally slamming it back down.
Beneath where it fell lay a sharp, snow-white long blade. The little serpent, however, struck the back of the blade when it crashed down.
Snow-white scales flew off. The little serpent struggled violently, a crimson bloodline stretching from its back all the way to the tip of its tail.
It seemed to be desperately trying to break free of something.
With a creak, its skin split apart all over. From head to tail, countless openings tore open as fresh blood streamed down. Yet strangely, as those wounds split wider, its pain seemed to lessen, and the pained expression on its face eased somewhat.
Again the snow-white little serpent hissed into the sky. The countless wounds opened wider still, and it kept lifting itself up only to smash against the back of the blade.
So it went on, over and over, the little serpent endlessly struggling, endlessly repeating the same torment.
Then suddenly, a roar far deeper and more forceful than before rang out.
With a sharp crack, its flesh and blood shattered all at once.
From the wreckage, a streak of snow-white burst forth, swelling in an instant to a length of nearly a yard and the thickness of an arm. It was none other than the little white serpent from before, only far larger now, and even more extraordinary.
Its black eyes were bright and keen. Its gleaming white scales shone with a lustrous radiance, making it look like a divine serpent bathed in sacred white light.
On its back, the two fleshy wings had also grown from thumb-sized nubs to the size of a pair of palms. Though still not large, they now looked firm and sturdy, no longer as fragile as before.
As for the shattered flesh and blood, that was no flesh and blood at all, but rather a layer of scales and a layer of serpent skin. It had only looked like torn flesh because the shedding had been so violent and so much blood had flowed.
Behind the snow-white serpent's head, the single crimson bloodline had become two.
No longer solitary.
"Haha, this beastblood truly has an immense effect on you, just like the primal shaman bloodline does for me!"
Seeing Little Gold in such an extraordinary state, Lin Fan could not help feeling delighted, and he laughed as he spoke.
That was right. The one shedding its skin was none other than Little Gold. After killing Greedy Wolf and Liu Hong, Lin Fan had sighed inwardly at their wealth.
When Little Gold had tried to comfort him, he suddenly remembered that the beastblood was meant for Little Gold. That very night, he took it out.
The moment Little Gold saw the beastblood, it completely lost control. It was so excited it could barely contain itself, hissing nonstop. When it saw Lin Fan nod, it swallowed the bloodline in one gulp, and only then did this scene occur.
He had simply never expected the beastblood to help Little Gold so much.
Before, Little Gold had only one crimson bloodline. Yet the beastblood had directly given it another, which was equivalent to allowing Little Gold to undergo one more nirvanic rebirth and gain an extra life.
One had to know that every time a new crimson bloodline appeared, Little Gold first had to cultivate to the peak, then be reborn through nirvana and survive life and death before it could increase again.
And after gaining a crimson bloodline, its strength would vanish entirely, requiring everything to begin anew.
But this beastblood had not only added a crimson bloodline to Little Gold; it had not forced its strength back to square one. On the contrary, it had helped Little Gold digest some of the flesh-and-blood energy it had devoured earlier, allowing its strength to advance yet another step.
At this rate, Little Gold would probably not need much time before it could fully digest all the energy within its body and evolve once more.
Hearing Lin Fan's words, Little Gold sprang up from the ground without shortening its body, coiling itself around his shoulder and lowering its head to rub against his cheek.
"All right, all right, I get it."
Lin Fan's cheek itched from Little Gold's fussing, and he helplessly patted its head. This little fellow wanted more beastblood.
"System, buy a bottle of beastblood!"
Lin Fan issued the command directly in his mind. After encountering Greedy Wolf's two subordinates, his negative emotion points had already reached five hundred and twenty thousand. Then, after killing Greedy Wolf, his men, and Liu Hong, his negative emotion points had climbed to five hundred and forty thousand.
Now, after a whole night had passed, the people of Azure Snow Prefecture who still had him on their minds had also contributed another seventy or eighty thousand negative emotion points in dribs and drabs.
That brought him to six hundred and twenty thousand negative emotion points.
So if Little Gold still wanted beastblood, of course he was willing to give it. After all, strengthening Little Gold was, in another form, strengthening himself. There was nothing for him to be reluctant about.
