Chapter Eighty-Eight: Greedy Wolf and Liu Hong
The negative emotion value from Zhao Tiannan kept surging upward, in ever larger bursts.
Lin Fan paid the system notifications no mind. He looked at Zhao Tiannan and said, “I’ll give you one more chance. Listen carefully.”
“Question: if a greedy wolf has two hundred and eighty-one pieces of rock candy, four hundred and sixty-seven lollipops, and eight hundred and sixty-one marshmallows, and he eats one hundred and twenty-three pieces of rock candy, three hundred and sixteen lollipops, and seven hundred and fifty-six marshmallows, then what does the greedy wolf still have?”
Lin Fan rattled it off in a blur. Zhao Tiannan was so dazed he nearly went blank, but he still forced himself to memorize it. He did not care what the question was about so much as whether he could survive.
After a long calculation, his eyes burned with certainty. Confident that he had not misheard, he said, “He has one hundred and fifty-eight pieces of rock candy, one hundred and fifty-one lollipops, and one hundred and five marshmallows!”
He did not even know what these candies were, having never heard of them, but he was sure his arithmetic was right.
“Wrong. He has diabetes,” Lin Fan cut him off at once.
Zhao Tiannan: “?”
He did not even know what diabetes was!
“Oh, in the terms of this world, it’s sugar-blood disease!” Lin Fan slapped his forehead and explained.
More dark emotion spilled from Zhao Tiannan.
Wait.
This world?
Suddenly, Zhao Tiannan jolted awake, as though he had sensed something terribly important.
Crack.
Lin Fan crushed his throat in one hand. Zhao Tiannan’s head went limp, and with a dull thud, Lin Fan hurled the corpse to Little Gold.
The negative emotion from Zhao Tiannan rose again.
Little Gold, long since impatient, swallowed Zhao Tiannan in one gulp, then shrank down once more, coiling back into Lin Fan’s hair.
“It’s been a long time since I farmed negative emotion. Now that I’ve done it again, I feel wonderfully refreshed.”
Lin Fan stretched. In truth, the instant he killed Wei Tailong, he could have killed Zhao Tiannan as well. The only reason he had not done it sooner was that he wanted to squeeze a little more negative emotion out of him.
Zhao Tiannan was going to die sooner or later anyway. Better to torment him for a while first.
What remained was to find the greedy wolf. He had not asked Zhao Tiannan directly because he felt that if Zhao Tiannan and Wei Tailong were hunting here, then the greedy wolf could not be too far away.
Back then, when Lin Fan was fleeing the Snowstorm Bear, he had spent more than five hundred thousand negative emotion points on lottery draws, all for a chance to win a Life-Origin Pill.
In the end, he had not drawn a Life-Origin Pill, but he had obtained a Small Life-Origin Pill instead, which had the same effect.
By then, he had already drawn two hundred and thirty-eight times, spending a total of four hundred and seventy-six thousand negative emotion points, leaving him only about thirty-eight thousand.
Fortunately, after eight or nine days, his negative emotion value had climbed to about three hundred thousand.
Then, as he kept slaying fierce beasts during that time, it rose to four hundred and eighty thousand. Add the contributions from Wei Tailong and Zhao Tiannan just now, and it had reached five hundred and twenty thousand.
“Right, I still have eight Vitality Fruits. Eat them.”
Lin Fan struck his forehead. Only then did he remember that when he had been avoiding the Snowstorm Bear, he had apparently drawn many things and completely forgotten to look at them.
Among the things he remembered were those eight Vitality Fruits.
Without the slightest hesitation, he started walking in the direction Wei Tailong and Zhao Tiannan had come from, while condensing the Vitality Fruits and popping them into his mouth.
At the same time, he split his focus, reviewing what he had drawn with nearly four hundred and eighty thousand negative emotion points.
Among them were three bowls of spicy hotpot, a piece of stinky tofu, eight Body-Tempering Fruits, a Shattering God Crossbow, a Yue King Bow, a volume of Golden Vase and Plum Blossom, and a strand of Thousand-Poison Ice Silk.
Oh, and the older prizes too: a giant kite that said I Am Your Father, and a savage beast bloodline.
These were all the things he had drawn in the past, and none of them had been summoned yet.
The spicy hotpot and stinky tofu were certainly destined for his five viscera. The Body-Tempering Fruits were of no use to him and could be left for the family. With the Shattering God Crossbow, plus the one he had now, he had two of them.
As for the Yue King Bow, he was looking forward to it, but this was not the time to test a bow. As for the Thousand-Poison Ice Silk, he had no idea what it was.
Hmm... the savage beast bloodline could be given to Little Gold. This thing should not be worse than the Shaman Origin bloodline.
And that giant kite that said I Am Your Father? What an excellent tool for farming negative emotion.
As for Golden Vase and Plum Blossom...
By now, Lin Fan had already finished all eight Body-Tempering Fruits, and his vital energy strands had increased from one hundred and seventy-three to two hundred and fifty-three.
A devout expression appeared on his face, solemn and radiant, because he felt that it was time to summon Golden Vase and Plum Blossom and take a look!
Suddenly, his expression returned to calm. His soul power had sensed people ahead, and in an instant, his concealment technique rose to the limit as he slipped over.
“Why haven’t Tiannan and Tailong come back yet? Could it be they still haven’t found any prey?”
Although it was broad daylight, a campfire was burning up ahead. Several burly men sat around it, and one of them, over two meters tall and wielding a greatsword, asked the person beside him.
The man shrank his neck and said, “Boss, I really don’t know.”
“What’s the rush? When they come back, let them die then.”
Across from the burly man sat a middle-aged man in black luxurious robes. He suddenly spoke, and the whole area went quiet.
He did not seem to care. Looking at the burly man, he went on, “Greedy Wolf, remember this: no matter how many useless underlings you have, they are still useless. When we return, I’ll send you some men. You’ll wipe out the entire mercenary corps of the Battle Heaven Alliance and leave only your own people.”
“Yes, my lord.”
Greedy Wolf lowered his voice in reply.
Yet there was a trace of unwillingness in his eyes. Ever since he had thrown in with the Liu family and taken up position on the route through South Heaven City, he had brought seven men with him. And yet, because Liu Hong was so capricious, two of them had already been killed.
Now, Wei Tailong and Zhao Tiannan had suddenly been sentenced to death as well.
Of the seven men he had brought out, four would be lost in just a few days’ time. And not at the hands of enemies, but at the hands of the very people he had served.
“What? You’re unwilling?”
Seeing the unwillingness in Greedy Wolf’s eyes, Liu Hong rose to his feet and looked down at him from above.
“Even if you’re unwilling, hold it in. If you want to climb aboard my Liu family’s great ship and be our dog, then you’d better have the awareness of a dog.”
In truth, Liu Hong did not understand at all why his fourth brother had chosen to keep this Greedy Wolf around. His strength at the Meridian-Pulse Realm was decent enough, but this man reeked of trouble, and enemies were everywhere.
By keeping Greedy Wolf, all those enemies had naturally become the Liu family’s problem too.
The Liu family was powerful and did not fear them, but since Greedy Wolf had come to be a dog, he should have the proper awareness. His two underlings had shown him disrespect before, and Liu Hong had killed them, which had already put Greedy Wolf in a sour mood.
And now, after being ordered to do something, he still dared to be unwilling?
“Watch out!”
Suddenly, Greedy Wolf’s expression changed drastically as he shouted. Liu Hong had already retreated dozens of yards, and Greedy Wolf’s figure had done the same.
At their original positions, two arrows thudded into the ground, leaving behind two small holes.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Greedy Wolf and Liu Hong had dodged the crossbow bolts, but Greedy Wolf’s men had not. Three heavy thuds rang out, and three burly men fell to the ground.
Blood streamed from the arrows that had pierced their foreheads. Their faces still wore the expressions they had had moments before, and they died without even understanding what had happened.
“That was quick.”
Lin Fan stepped out from the dense forest, smiling as he said to Liu Hong, “No need for you to kill Wei Tailong and Zhao Tiannan anymore. I already dealt with them for you.”
“So I should thank you, then.”
Seeing Lin Fan appear, Liu Hong merely let a flicker of surprise pass through his eyes. He was not the least bit angry. Instead, he smiled and bowed to Lin Fan with exceptional politeness.
The instant he bent down, Lin Fan suddenly tilted his head slightly. A poison needle, the length of a palm, shot through the spot where his head had just been and pinned itself into the Dragon Cang Tree behind him.
In an instant, the Dragon Cang Tree began to turn dark green around the poison needle.
“That poison needle is pretty vicious. Even a Meridian-Pulse Realm cultivator would die from this poison.”
Lin Fan laughed as he spoke, praising the toxin greatly, utterly unconcerned. Greedy Wolf, however, saw this and changed expression at once.
“Your strength is not what the intelligence reported. You must already be at the Meridian-Pulse Realm, right? It’s truly hard to imagine: a Meridian-Pulse Realm cultivator at seventeen.”
Liu Hong praised him, too. Ever since he had received word and come to block the route through South Heaven City, he had known that Lin Fan possessed the strength to kill Qi-Pulse Realm experts, or rather, that Lin Fan possessed a weapon capable of killing them.
