Chapter 8: Playing the Part [8]
"Jing Nuo, Auntie Liang made your favorite dishes." Not knowing how to end the awkward moment, Wen Xiaorou turned and grabbed Jing Nuo’s arm, perhaps yearning for him to understand her painstaking efforts; she had spent the entire morning getting ready just to deliver this meal.
"Feng Jing, you’re here." Jing Nuo completely ignored Wen Xiaorou’s presence. His entire focus shifted to Feng Jing, who was striding into the Shangjing Group headquarters with great energy. His attitude toward her was a stark contrast to his reception of Wen Xiaorou—as if one were a piece of cake and the other a piece of dung, with Wen Xiaorou undoubtedly cast as the latter.
"Jing Nuo, thank you! I know you’re busy, yet you still made time to have lunch with me." Feng Jing approached him with a face full of blissful smiles, then stood on her tiptoes to plant a kiss on his lips. At that moment, Wen Xiaorou felt completely shattered. This was her first time visiting the Shangjing Group, and she had run straight into Feng Jing. How could it be such a coincidence? They must meet often for her to have caught them in the act today; it was even possible that whenever Jing Nuo didn't come home, he was with Feng Jing.
Wen Xiaorou had known of Feng Jing’s existence since the time she married Jing Nuo. They were university classmates, and on the day Jing Nuo and Wen Xiaorou registered their marriage, he had confessed that the woman he loved was Feng Jing, not her. Over the two years of their marriage, Feng Jing had visited the Jing household under the guise of being his friend, so Wen Xiaorou had long been familiar with her.
"Xiaorou, what are you doing here? Have you had lunch? Why don't you join us?" After her intimate display with Jing Nuo, Feng Jing finally noticed Wen Xiaorou, who had been standing there like air. Facing her, Feng Jing showed not a hint of embarrassment; her intimacy with Jing Nuo seemed perfectly natural and justified.
"I’m going home to eat. You two go ahead with your work," Wen Xiaorou said. Looking at the radiant and charismatic Feng Jing, she immediately shrank into herself, unable to face her directly. Because Jing Nuo loved this woman, and because she felt like the villain in their love story, she could not hold her head high.
"Alright, if that’s the case, I won't force you. I’ll come to see you when I have time next." Every one of Feng Jing’s actions was so natural—kissing Jing Nuo, linking her arm with his, and greeting her with such fiery enthusiasm. Wen Xiaorou could only watch it all helplessly. Watching another woman kiss her husband and walk away with him, arm in arm, she despised herself in the depths of her heart—despising her cowardice and her own pathetic, humble state.
"Who is the real mistress of the house? Who is the wife, and who is the mistress?" Feng Jing’s appearance completely confused the onlookers. They had occasionally seen her at the Shangjing Group before, but they had assumed the boss’s true wife must be someone low-key who rarely frequented the office. Seeing Wen Xiaorou today, they couldn't help but wonder if she was the legitimate wife, yet based on the scene unfolding before them, it seemed Feng Jing was the one who truly held that place.
"So it really is Miss Feng?" The tone of the front desk staff was thick with envy, jealousy, and resentment as they watched Feng Jing walk away, arm in arm with their big boss.
"Miss Rou, please don't cry. The young master is just young and impulsive; he’ll settle down in a couple of years," the driver said. Inside the car, Wen Xiaorou was wiping away tears in the backseat, but she hadn't escaped the driver’s watchful eyes.
Wen Xiaorou had no words for the comfort offered. If she had caught him with any other woman, she might have found solace in the driver’s words. But because it was Feng Jing, she lacked the strength to even attempt a counterattack; she could only watch, heartbroken, as they deliberately flaunted their love.
