Chapter 22: The Best Birthday Gift [2]
"Do you have time tomorrow? Let's meet," the girl said, noticing Wen Xiaorou’s calm demeanor and feeling herself relax in response.
“Meet?” Wen Xiaorou was even more puzzled. What could this woman want from her? Was she going to explain something? But how did she know Wen Xiaorou was Jing Nuo’s wife? Besides Feng Jing, no other woman knew that. Wen Xiaorou had wanted to refuse, but curiosity got the better of her, so she nodded in agreement.
The next day, Wen Xiaorou dressed herself carefully and had the driver take her out. Jing Nuo had scolded her just yesterday, so she had learned her lesson—she wouldn’t sneak out alone to avoid unnecessary arguments.
When Wen Xiaorou arrived at the café, she saw a girl waiting at the designated spot. She walked over slowly, observing the girl named Fei’er. The girl had short hair, wore a short skirt paired with a dark jacket, and looked extremely competent—a stark contrast to the fragile image often portrayed in the media.
“Ms. Jing?” The woman saw Wen Xiaorou approaching and, guessing correctly that she was Mrs. Jing, stood up and extended her right hand in greeting.
“Yes.” Wen Xiaorou responded politely, nodding with a faint smile.
“What would you like to drink, Mrs. Jing?” The woman flipped through the menu as she spoke.
“Just plain water,” Wen Xiaorou replied, disliking flavored teas.
“Waiter, one plain water, please.” The woman promptly ordered a glass of water for Wen Xiaorou, showing no sign of nervousness.
“Miss Lin asked to see me about something?” Wen Xiaorou had looked up Fei’er’s real name—Lin Fei’er—online the previous night.
“Mrs. Jing, I’m facing a difficult situation and can’t make up my mind. I want to ask for your advice,” Fei’er said, gaining confidence as she noticed Wen Xiaorou’s gentle nature.
“I barely know you, Miss Lin. I’m afraid I can’t decide on this,” Wen Xiaorou said, sensing the woman’s attitude shifting and feeling a bad premonition.
“Mrs. Jing, you and Jing Nuo have been married for two years with no children. Now I’m carrying Jing Nuo’s child. Do you think this child should be kept or not?” Fei’er, seeing Wen Xiaorou as someone easy to intimidate, didn’t take her seriously. Although Jing Nuo had hidden his marriage, rumors had long circulated in their aristocratic circles about his troubled marriage. That was why she dared to meet Wen Xiaorou. Unexpectedly, Wen Xiaorou was a stunning beauty—far surpassing Jing Nuo’s other mistresses. Fei’er couldn’t help but feel frustrated about why Jing Nuo and Wen Xiaorou didn’t get along.
“I’m neither the child’s mother nor the father. You’d better ask the father about this,” Wen Xiaorou nearly broke down upon hearing the word ‘child.’ She was stunned for a long moment before replying. Jing Nuo’s mother had been right—the woman outside had beaten her to it.
Wen Xiaorou wanted to calm herself, but couldn’t. Though Jing Nuo had been careless outside over the years, this was the first time a woman had come to her door—and it wasn’t Feng Jing. Wen Xiaorou found it hard to accept; if it had been Feng Jing, perhaps she would have felt better.
“Mrs. Jing, I have no other intention. I’m just giving you a chance to prepare yourself mentally, so when Jing Nuo tells you, you won’t be caught off guard,” Fei’er’s tone was clear—she was leveraging her pregnancy to pressure Wen Xiaorou, all while playing the role of the good person.
