Chapter 30: Come to Think of It, It Is Rather Embarrassing
Ye Wanyan had seen the visitor and was preparing to leave. She had no intention of meeting Madam and Master Ye Zhaoru, so she took a detour through the garden. There, however, she spotted someone hurrying toward her from the opposite side.
Qingsha hesitated. “That seems to be Madam Lin.”
The young woman looked to be barely over twenty, yet she possessed none of the composed dignity typical of the ladies in the capital. She came running at full speed, vigorous and unrestrained. Among all the people Ye Wanyan knew, only her cousin-in-law from her maternal grandfather’s family had such a temperament.
Wu Yu was the daughter of a military commander. Bold and forthright, she knew how to handle people, but she was guileless at heart and said whatever came to mind. People like her had never been welcome in a place such as the capital.
“Cousin Wanyan—no, Your Grace, please wait!”
Wu Yu came rushing over. The distance of several yards vanished in the blink of an eye, yet she was neither flushed nor out of breath.
Ye Wanyan could not help envying her excellent health.
“Your Grace.” Wu Yu gave a somewhat awkward salute.
Ye Wanyan returned it gracefully. “Sister-in-law.”
Wu Yu hurriedly said, “There is no need for such courtesy, Your Grace.”
She had always been broad-minded and straightforward. Seeing someone as delicate and lovely as Ye Wanyan, she nearly wished she could cradle her in the palm of her hand.
Such a beautiful, charming girl stirred even a woman’s protective feelings. Come to think of it, it was rather embarrassing.

Wu Yu handed Ye Wanyan a box. “The Old Madam asked me to give this to Your Grace.”
“What is it?”
Wu Yu leaned closer and whispered mysteriously, “A secret remedy for bearing a son.”
Ye Wanyan had only just begun to change expression when Wu Yu frowned disdainfully. “It tastes awful and is completely useless. I have been drinking it for years, and look at me—I have nothing to show for it. But the Old Madam was determined that I bring it to you, so I had to deliver it.”
Wu Yu was truly one of a kind. Her bluntness was so disarming that Ye Wanyan could not help laughing.
“Then thank you, Sister-in-law.”
Wu Yu waved her hand. “What is there to thank me for? It was no trouble at all. The Old Madam insisted that I deliver it personally and reminded me again and again. Anyone who did not know better would think it was some miraculous elixir.”
Ye Wanyan pressed a hand to her forehead. It was no wonder so many people disliked Wu Yu. She was simply too forthright for anyone to handle. In fact, Ye Wanyan herself had once found her somewhat irritating.
“Oh, right. The Old Madam has prepared quite a few things for Your Grace and is getting ready to send them to the palace. My family has also sent some local specialties. I hope Your Grace will like them.”
When speaking of her family’s gifts, Wu Yu seemed rather embarrassed. The Wu family were military men and not particularly well-off. They had little of value to offer; they could not compare with the Ye family, or even the Lin family. Wu Yu would have liked to send Ye Wanyan something finer, but her means simply did not allow it.
Ye Wanyan thought: So why do you keep blushing at the slightest thing?
“Thank you, Sister-in-law. I will write a letter when I return. I must trouble you to take it back with you.”

Wu Yu smiled. “Of course, of course.”
Ye Wanyan was about to leave when she suddenly turned around. “Sister-in-law, could you do me a favor?”
Wu Yu answered without the slightest hesitation. “All right!”
Ye Wanyan was momentarily speechless. “You are not even going to ask what I want you to do?”
Wu Yu simply asked in return, “Then what do you want me to do?”
Ye Wanyan was thoroughly defeated. She even began to wonder whether she should ask for Wu Yu’s help at all. Still, at present, she truly had no one more suitable for the task.
She beckoned Wu Yu closer and whispered the matter into her ear.
Wu Yu immediately thumped her chest. “No problem. Your Grace can rest assured.”
Looking at her chest, Ye Wanyan could not help grasping her hand. “Stop hitting yourself. Does it not hurt?”
That was the most delicate part of a woman’s body, yet Wu Yu had been pounding it as though it were an iron plate.
After leaving the Prime Minister’s residence, Ye Wanyan sat in the carriage, still unable to suppress her laughter. How had she never realized before that her sister-in-law was so amusing?
