Chapter 16: The Big Catch Others Cannot Buy—Eat It Whenever You Want!
After dinner, Qin Lin entered the game and took out the thirty-one-pound Grade 2 wild grass carp.
Whenever one visited someone’s home, it was customary to bring a gift. Qin Ren’s father suffered from high blood pressure, and this Grade 2 wild grass carp had a beneficial effect of minus two on high blood pressure.
A thirty-one-pound fish was rather difficult to lift. It was also extremely slippery. When Qin Lin threaded a rope through its gills and hoisted it up, the fish continued thrashing desperately. Worse, it was incredibly strong, and he nearly lost his grip.
Fortunately, after a brief struggle, the fish finally ran out of strength. It could only open and close its mouth helplessly, at the mercy of others.
Qin Ren’s family lived in Scholar’s Residence, a neighborhood with an auspicious name. It was not in the city center, however. When Qin Lin arrived, four people were inside: Qin Ren’s parents, Uncle Shuigen and Aunt Shuigen, along with two young women.
One of the women was Qin Ren’s girlfriend, Liao Li, a nurse at the county hospital. Technically, they were engaged, but she had already been living with Qin Ren for quite some time.
As for the other woman, she was probably Liao Li’s close friend or relative.
“Xiao Lin, you’re here?” Qin Shuigen was clearly in high spirits. After all, his son was about to get engaged. But in the next moment, his gaze was drawn to the enormous fish in Qin Lin’s hands.
Or rather, the moment Qin Lin stepped through the door, everyone’s attention was captured by the thirty-one-pound grass carp.
It was rare for ordinary people to see a grass carp that large.
Qin Lin had to keep the fish’s head above his waist. Otherwise, its tail would drag along the floor.
Qin Ren ran over in astonishment. “Holy crap, Linzi, where did you get such a huge catch?”
Qin Lin handed the grass carp to him. “It’s good for high blood pressure. I brought it for Uncle Shuigen.”
Holding the fish, Qin Ren could not resist gesturing excitedly. Even Liao Li and the other girl took out their phones and began photographing it.
A fish like this was certainly worth showing off on social media.
“Huh?” Qin Shuigen suddenly exclaimed. After examining the fish closely, he said in surprise, “Xiao Lin, is this a wild grass carp?”
“Yes, Uncle Shuigen.” Qin Lin nodded. “I was lucky enough to catch one this big, so I brought it over for you.”
When Qin Ren heard that, he immediately said, “Linzi, you caught this fish yourself? That’s not fair. You went after such a huge catch without taking me along. Remember to call me next time there’s something like this.”
Qin Shuigen frowned. “You child. It’s enough that you came. Why bring such an expensive gift? You can’t even buy a wild catch this size with money. Take it back.”
“Uncle Shuigen, since a gift has already been brought to your door, how could I take it back?” Qin Lin shook his head and hurriedly changed the subject. “There’s another reason I came today. When my father was ill, he borrowed fifty thousand from your family. Qin Ren is about to get engaged, so I’ve come to repay it.”
“Xiao Lin, where did you get so much money?” Qin Shuigen frowned again. “We already have enough for Xiao Ren’s engagement. There’s no need for you to rush to repay us.”
But while he was speaking, Qin Lin had already opened WeChat on his phone and transferred fifty thousand to Qin Ren.
“Uncle Shuigen, isn’t it only right to repay a debt? Now that I have the money, I should naturally pay it back first.”
“Dad!” Qin Ren helplessly took out his phone and showed it to Qin Shuigen.

Seeing this, Qin Shuigen could only sigh. He went inside, brought out an IOU, and handed it to Qin Lin.
“Xiao Lin, you’ll make something of yourself. There isn’t a single person your age in the village who is as sensible as you.”
Aunt Shuigen was also deeply moved. “Xiao Lin, you’ve had such a difficult life, yet you’re so considerate that it makes people envious. If Xiao Ren were even half as sensible as you, we’d have far fewer worries.”
“Mom, how am I not sensible?” Qin Ren asked, clearly dissatisfied.
“Go away,” Aunt Shuigen said irritably.
The exchange made Liao Li and the other girl burst into laughter.
Qin Lin was momentarily at a loss. He drank a cup of tea, asked whether Qin Ren needed any help with the engagement, and then took his leave. Qin Ren and his parents accompanied him outside.
Inside the house, the other girl whispered to Liao Li, “Lili, your cousin’s future husband’s friend seems pretty good. He’s not bad-looking either. Why don’t you add him on WeChat so I can get to know him?”
After hearing the two older people praise Qin Lin so highly, she had apparently developed some interest in him.
How could Liao Li not understand what her cousin was thinking? She lowered her voice and said, “His name is Qin Lin. He really is a good person, but his family’s circumstances aren’t very good. He has neither a car nor a house, and after paying back this fifty thousand, he may not have any savings left. Nana, think carefully. Do you really want his WeChat?”
“Lili, I was only joking. You actually took me seriously?” Chu Na immediately laughed it off.
As if she would do something so foolish. She had long since passed the stage of pursuing passionate love without regard for material concerns.
Being a good person and looking decent were merely the basic requirements. Without some additional advantages, she was not foolish enough to throw herself into trouble.
Liao Li could not help rolling her eyes at her cousin. No wonder that woman was destined to remain single.
A short while later, Qin Ren and his parents returned.
Qin Shuigen did not forget to instruct Qin Ren, “You must not tell anyone that Xiao Lin came to repay the money.”
“Dad, I know.” Qin Ren nodded.
Both father and son understood why Qin Lin had come to repay them. He had clearly learned that their family was short of money for the engagement. The fifty thousand might very well have represented all of Qin Lin’s savings.
Yet Qin Lin’s family still owed money to other people. If word got out that he had repaid fifty thousand all at once, people would certainly go to his home and nag them about it.
Qin Ren added, “Dad, since Linzi brought the fish, let’s cook some tonight to help nourish you. You can have a little liquor with it too. It’ll help you sleep.”
Qin Shuigen shot his son a look. How could he not know that Qin Ren simply wanted to satisfy his own appetite? Still, he nodded.
He had never eaten a wild fish this large before.
Late that night, after a pot of fish soup had finished simmering, Qin Ren’s family ate it and felt an indescribable sense of comfort. Their entire bodies were warm and relaxed.
When Qin Shuigen got up the next morning, he found it even more incredible. Because of his high blood pressure, he usually suffered from headaches and dizziness upon waking. But that morning, he felt noticeably lighter, and his spirits were much better as well.
…
As usual, Qin Lin got up and harvested the strawberries and okra before sending them to RT-Mart. In the afternoon, he tried controlling his game character to fish by the river and discovered that he could fish successfully once again.

Over the course of one afternoon, he caught another thirty-four fish. They were still the same three species: wild crucian carp, wild grass carp, and wild black carp. Among them were also Grade 2 crucian carp weighing more than ten pounds, Grade 2 grass carp weighing more than twenty or thirty pounds, and Grade 2 black carp.
This allowed him to identify the pattern. It seemed that any fish reaching the size of a large catch was Grade 2, while the rest were Grade 1.
At dusk, he harvested another batch of strawberries and okra and sent them to RT-Mart, bringing in another thirty-eight thousand two hundred and sixteen yuan for the day.
For the next three days, he fell into a routine of planting strawberries and okra, delivering strawberries and okra, and fishing.
Those three days also confirmed that the fish in the river refreshed every afternoon. He could fish then, catching between thirty and forty fish before receiving the notification that there were no more fish in the river.
Including the fish he had caught during the previous two days, he now had a total of one hundred and sixty-eight fish.
Among them were nine Grade 2 crucian carp weighing more than ten pounds, four Grade 2 black carp weighing over twenty pounds, and six Grade 2 grass carp weighing over thirty pounds.
For the time being, he did not deal with these wild fish. They were all live fish, and being wild-caught made them troublesome to transport. He planned to wait until he had accumulated more.
When the time came, he would sell a large batch all at once and decide whether to continue looking for Manager Chen or go to the seafood market.
Still, over those three days, the strawberries and okra had brought him another one hundred and thirteen thousand six hundred and forty-eight yuan. In just three days, he had earned nearly one hundred and twenty thousand.
Even after repaying fifty thousand to Qin Ren’s family, he still had more than four hundred and ten thousand yuan in his bank account.
That was the money he had earned in such a short period.
As the sun went down, Qin Lin once again brought home an eleven-pound Grade 2 wild crucian carp.
The fish in the river refreshed every afternoon, so these Grade 2 wild catches would never run out. They were things other people could not buy even if they had the money, while he could eat them whenever he wanted.
“Another wild crucian carp this big?” Lin Fen stared at the fish in her son’s hands, her face filled with astonishment.
How could she not be surprised?
This was the third fish of such size that her son had brought home in recent days.
Wild crucian carp this large were truly impossible to buy. Even if you had money, it was useless if no one could catch them. Yet these days, she had been eating them every day.
Qin Lin smiled. “Mom, these are easy to get. We won’t run short in the future.”
“???” Lin Fen was not sure whether her son was telling the truth.
Who would dare claim that wild fish this large were easy to obtain?
By all logic, her son had to be bragging. Yet he really had been bringing home one fish after another.
